The lyre singing sweetly
In a cheerless world
Made stony facades crack
And icicles to melt
Who could refuse this lover
Whose music could soothe the searing sea?
Not the boatsman of the river Styx
Persuaded by sound to allow passage
Nor even the beastly guardian of Hades
Who was made docile by the heart-robbing melody
Even death's bride was enchanted
By the low mournful tones
A wish granted to the man
Whose music begot love
In the most abhorrent of souls
But a turn of the head sealed his doom
For even as the light of his eyes touched her face
She was lost to him forever
Tears nor lovely tunes can retrieve her now
Nothing but death's bittersweet kiss
Will unite the ill-fated couple
