The search for food is over
She moves a bit faster.
Hot noon bewilders her
Is summer really over?
Students are back
After the summer break.
Mess in the mess
Workers still fresh.
More students, more plates
More wastage, more food.
The thought gives her strength
The waste bin at arms length.
The new bin is taller
She finds it difficult to ladder.
She feels heavier this time
Healthy pups her long time aim.
Gulp by gulp
She becomes a bit plump.
As she climbs down
An angry log rattles her bone.
Shock, pain, fear, anger
She is a bundle of emotions.
The safe shady spot
Is not very far.
Let the pain be bone deep
The pups inside should not weep.
She bears this pain
Awaits labour pain.
She feels heavier this time
Healthy pups her long time aim.

Thank you for your poem entry in this contest. Yes, it is unfortunate that this is the tragic plight of countless dogs and cats that are stray, and left to fend for themselves...
These animals are our responsibility! Humanity domesticated cats and dogs from the wild, originally...and it is our ethical duty to care for them.
Your poem describes this so well...the suffering that dogs and cats endure because of human neglect. There is no excuse for this! There is nothing worse than a pregnant cat or dog enduring this hell of abandonment...Their love and devotion to their unborn and their offspring is touching, and the self-sacrifice!
Your ending to the poem emphasizes this;
"Let the pain be bone deep
The pups inside should not weep.
She bears this pain
Awaits labour pain.
She feels heavier this time
Healthy pups her long time aim."
Thanks again for your compassionate and insightful poem.

Oh... I love this. I am an absolute animal lover. I've raised 2 shelties from pups. My heart aches for those animals who are treated so cruelly, and don't understand why people think it amusing to hurt helpless creatures. Awesome poem you have written, thank you for this entry in my contest.

Beautiful poem full of the emotion a mother holds in her belly alongwith the little ones yet to be born. I loved the imagery here. The poem reminded me of my pups in Pune, both who died at age 3 months. I still miss them terribly. I liked the assonance and alliteration usage in your poem. Excellent alliteration in the title! What point really hit home with me is how students(humans) waste food and how it is the animals who hunt for even a small bit of food in garbage cans and bins..its so sad. If only we could all learn to share and care for the animals, the world would be a more humane place to walk on. May God bless you for spreading awareness through the pen.
All the best,
Charishma

Thanks a lot for the detailed comments that you have given taking into account the various aspects of the poem. I have written the poem long back and it remained incomplete for more than a year. I never thought I would be getting such a nice and encouraging comment for the poem. I have seen skinny old dogs being chased by the people when they attempt to feed from the bins over flowing with food that is wasted just for the sake of it. This continues to happen and beating the dog for fun is at practice as young and old join hands to trouble the harmless creatures. I thought of posting the poem at the time when the dogs are tormented in Bangalore after the death of a couple of children after being attacked by dogs. I got horrified at the sight of cruelty done to these dogs which are shown on NDTV. Thanks a lot again for your time and beautiful review.

Its not run of the mill, and it certainly shows talent. Why the gap? Not that I havent just returned myself from one...a lil bit of a healing getaway, a shady spot
I love it, you should flow out as much and as often as you like, good writing! Take care Poet!
