Social Mania

Freakishly capable of hiding
my true mindframe behind miles of walls,
the truth of what I'm feeling
at any given moment
may or may not even be known to myself.

Covering up social anxiety
with a blend of confidence,
suavity, and disconnectedness,
the true terrors I experience deep down
during every moment spent in the presence
of other beating hearts
only allow themselves to be shown
when they are alone with me and my
self-pity.

Hark! the herald angel sings,
but he looks straight through me,
unwilling to bless the one who
will not bless himself
(out of fear),
or at least conveniently side-stepping
the problem in order to
hold it back until the cracks become too much to bear.

Utopia is wrecked under the constant deluge
as, once isolated,
every individual crack bursts forth
with the raging force of Kralizec,
the storm of the end times.

The next sleep might be eternal.

Or it may be so simple as painting a brand new mask;
they're a dime-a-dozen at the craft store
since they seem to be in such high demand.

Author notes

This started out as a blog post over on melodramatic.com, but it become a poem rather fast. I like some of my imagery, but I'm not sure I expressed my central idea all that clearly. What do you guys get from it?

Imagery and descriptions are well expressed, but perhaps the poem's a tad unsteady in places. Referring back to already-mentioned images within your poem may have created a tighter, more powerful piece.

I love "so simple as painting a brand new mask" - dramatic and easy to imagine.

Thanks for entering this poem in my contest.
