The Autumn of the Fallen

Walking through the city lights,
My mind is filled with all sounds from people enjoying their city nights.
Stranger's joyous cries, all their laughter reaches my ears.

I remember my first night in the big city,
I was just a kid then.
I came here to persue my dream,
I came here to persue my life.
And most of all, I came to persue my love.

The love notes from long ago,
The letters from across the sea,
I kept them all.
My love and I sent eachother letters every day,
And I loved everything she would say.
I came to the big city to meet her,
Face to face.
For we had been without eachother for too long,
We decided to end the streak of our pain,
We decided that from our love, there could be something to gain.

But that was so long ago,
And my dream was shattered soon after.

There was a feeling inside my soul,
And it told me that she was the one,
That she was whom I was meant to be with,
And on the wings of a dream I followed her aura,
And on the wings of love I was ripped from my home,
I was kidnapped, blinded by my love for this woman.

I was such a fool then,
For I thought happieness could be true.
But I learned the truth that autumn.

I entered the city late September,
And what happened after is almost too painful to remember.
We met, we loved, and we planned to marry,
All in a matter of weeks.
Whomever we told said we rushed,
And said we were crazy,
But we didn't hear them,
We were flying above the earth's skepticism,
On the wings of love,
On the wings of a dream.

I wish I had listened to them, they who I called friends,
They told me to wait, not to rush into marrige,
But I was young and foolish,
And I learned my lesson the long way.

We made a mistake that would destroy two lives,
That horrid October now past,
We made a wrong move, and we put ourselves into a checkmate.

A mafioso lived in the appartment across the hall,
From the soul I adorned in whole,
And when I ran into financial trouble,
He lent me a helping hand.
You see I moved to the city with no money,
I was flat out broke.
Jobs were hard to find,
And I needed money fast.
And God sent him down to put me back onto my feet.

Oh, was I a fool! Was I so ignorant,
That I could not see under the angelic face of hope?
Could I not see he was a leech of human life?
A scavenger from the streets?

I told him I could pay him back within a month,
And then it went by.
The anger beneath his face of love showed,
And then I realized my flaw.
I needed the money I had to keep clothes on my back,
But he wanted it all back.
He charged me more until I was broke,
But the numbers just kept growing.

Then threats started in,
And I could finallys see his sin,
Hidded behind celestial eyes.
He had such a well made disguise.

If only I had known what would happen next,
I could have saved three lives,
The third not so innocnet,
As the ones he tried to take away.

Late November I heard a pounding on my appartment door,
I opened it and a police officer stood there,
And said my love was no more.
He told me a mafioso was after me,
And even though he was in custody,
It would be smart for me to leave town.

A week went by and the funeral came and went,
And I went home and packed my things.

I could leave the city behind,
But I could never leave my memories,
And I could never leave my experiences during the autumn of the fallen.
My fallen angel.

Author notes

So I picked the 2nd option, and decided to write a story with it. =)

Wow! This poem is amazing, but really sad though... Can you please tell me if this is true story?
Anyways.. I like the last stanza:
"I could leave the city behind,
But I could never leave my memories,
And I could never leave my experiences during the autumn of the fallen.
    My fallen angel."

I mean, the whole poem is excellent, but the last part is so vivid, that it made me feel all that pain described. Good job and good luck in my contest!
