Fellow Authors, I Need Your Help!

Remember about a year ago I said one of my stories had been bought for publication?

The book's out. Story is in there, my name is even listed on the back cover.

Problem: I never received the payment I was promised. It's $100 and two copies of the book. I was never sent an email beyond my acceptance letter, nothing.

I sent them an inquiring email. Question: if this yields nothing, what should I do?

Give me some advice, please!

Hi Sis. You seem to have a bit of a dilemma. Joe did some business with an attorney, and the case was compromised by the attorney's office. I wrote a very stern letter to the lawyer and included all pertinent information. The first letter yieled nothing, but the second did. I promised to seek legal cousel against them for the suggested amount of the compromised case. He received a letter on Wednesday of last week that he will receive the entire amount of his money back.

Give them three days to respond to your email. If they have not replied, I suggest you write a letter to them and make sure you have confirmation that the stories are YOURS and copyrighted. I do hope you have all the correspondence to and from the company.

If you need help with that letter, you just let me know. Your work is superb and well worth much more that $100, but I'm very proud of you for being published. You write that letter and put at the bottom that you are sending copies to governmental agencies (not sure who that would be). It is not necessary for you to send these other letters unless you get no action from the publisher. Good luck, Sis, and GO GET 'EM!!!

It seems unlikely that they would try to cheat you out of payment. Most likely it's just an admin or postal problem. However, keep hard copies of all your correspondance with them, and if it comes to it, maybe seek legal help. Either way, you got a story published. That's the main thing, so congrats.
