Death by Sugar

Josie
delights
in lapping
at my face and hands.
Her warm tongue bathes
toes, hands,
any exposed skin.
She tastes the
sugar in my
sweat.

Funny that sweat
is so close to
sweet.

She doesn't know
it's killing me.

      Thanks for the comment

I was reading a story about dogs that have been trained as assistance animals to people with severe diabetes. Basically, the dog periodically licks the skin of the owner, and can tell by the taste, whether their blood sugar is out of whack, and will alert the owner if there's danger.

I was fascinated by the story and thinking about how one would react to such a scenario by personifying the dog and giving it thoughts and emotions having to do with its task when in fact dogs have no way of conceptualizing such and remain totally innocent to the life-and-death role they play.
