Via Dolorosa

Fear not for I have overcome the world
Just put ALL your trust in me,
I stole back the keys of hell and death
from Satan who is now tormenting thee.

Remember Via Dolorosa
In an Old Jeruselem,
it was there by some of my own
to death I was condemned.

Cato'tail whips with fragments
of metals, glass and bone,
unleashed the fury of their hatred
held for me and me alone.

Blow by blow ripped my flesh
yet I saw only the victory,
light overcoming darkness
waged the greatest battle in history.

A war not of flesh and blood
but in the realm of spirit,
all my sheep will know my voice
and harken when they hear it.

As I carried that rugged cross
to the top of Calvary's hill,
I saw the lame walk, and dumb talk
giving glory to my father's will.

Gashing holes shed healing blood
as they nailed me to that tree,
deaf ears opened, blind eyes see
millions oppressed are now set free.

A crown of thorns thrust deep within
as mockery was their intent,
but I saw only the golden crown
as slowly the cross upward went.

Two thieves on either side of me
one looked over tears in eyes,
pleading"Remember me in your kingdom"
"This day you'll join me in paradise."

The very first act of salvations grace
and yet I'm still alive,
as I later declared "It is finished"
with a mighty thrust a sword did drive.

They thought they'd won the victory
as water from me spilled,
but at that very given moment
earth in it's entirety darkness filled.

Many eyes to truth were opened
as their world began to quake,
torrential tears from heaven poured
revealed in magnitude their grave mistake.

I then went straight to Satan
crushing his neck with mighty foot,
grabbed the keys of hell and death
leaving him defeated in the pit of soot.

But on that third day I rose again
a stone triumphantly rolled away,
the sun broke through with rays of light
giving dawn to a brand new day.

So be of good cheer and fear not I say
on THIS day you too, can overcome,
all your fears, doubts and phobias
armed by word, spirit and love so awesome.

Beautiful! I love the way you described the amazing way Jesus acted and persisted with love, doing it all so that we can overcome today. The rhyme scheme and structure worked really well to supplement the content. It makes the poem very direct, yet maintaining a sense of elegance and beauty.

And I will just say this stanza in particular rocked me:

"A war not of flesh and blood
but in the realm of spirit,
all my sheep will know my voice
and harken when they hear it."

That is awesome! The rhyme and meter are absolutely perfect there! God has blessed you and it is just beautiful to see you giving Him the glory and returning that gift. May your work continue to give Him praise!

    I love this poem!
    ~G~

P.S. - I just realized I have actually already commented on this...sorry for being silly, lol, but I stick by what I said regardless. This is a fantastic poem, haha

  • This was such a refreshing poem! I agree with Rose Angel: thanks for putting it on the feature list. Only He holds the hope that the world is so desperately searching for.

Thank you dear Toni for putting your poem in the feature list, as we need the story told and retold...as it is the true Easter story..Your biblical account reminds us of His suffering, and His triumphant resurrection...And because He lives, we too shall live that believe in Him!

This poem is so amazing, it touched me so deeply. I thought MY easter poem was good...haha, this rocks 32131242 times more. Amazing job! bless you. With his life Jesus taught us the most important, that happiness is achieved loving inconditionally and living a humble life, smiling at even the 'lowest' of human beings, offering love and forgiveness to whoever seeks it...he showed all his love for the human race and humility at the day of his crucification. Through his words and actions he showed us the road to heaven and therefore to hapiness. I LOVE HIM.
Amazing job and God Bless you!

    Worthy of GOLD

Toni, as a Jewish woman, who attended a Catholic school, your brilliant words, touched me so. Your heart is gentle and you have such an unbelievable faith in the Lord, I feel a strong connection to you. After all, Jesus was Jewish, and was betrayed at a Seder dinner. Judiasm, the oldest monotheistic religion in the history of our world, as we know it, didn't accept the preaching of one of their own. He was cast out and belittled.Realistically, if you really think about your words and accept Christ as your Saviour, then you, in essence are Jewish, too. For we are all brothers and sisters, under one God. Brave of you to tell of his terrible travails. I applaud your tenacity and beautiful words. I'm very happy that you won the bronze. I would like you to be my friend. I am NOT afraid at all of the bigoted word of Mr. Barry Hodges! ONe who intimidates, is another Hitler, and Fie! to him. His level of intelligence is nil. Congratulations on a well written verse!

    Namaste!

I absolutely love this. Your title is what drew me in to read this, for a few months back I was lucky enough to have come across this most beautiful song, "Via Dolorosa." You tell the story of this most horrific deed of man's many shortcomings and the cruelty they can impose in this most beautiful poem. It is beyond my own comprehension as to how the people could not see who Jesus really was. They knew He had healed the sick, fed the 5,000, made the lame to walk. Who but the Son of God could have performed all these miracles and more? This is a fantastic poem attesting to this fact. Very well done dear poet. Your friend in Poetry, Mysty Rain

I don't find this inspiring, the language is fairly simple which is justifiable I suppose due to the pleasantly pieced rhyming scheme... I'm sure if this wasn't religious it wouldn't be in the spotlight....

It narrates fairly well, but it has no breath-taking qualities to be honest. A particularly weak stanza: "I then went straight to satan..." due to the fairly forced rhyme (leaving him in the pit of soot... somehow evoked images of a chimney sweep's existance rather than Hell) - a more effective stanza:

"As I carried that rugged cross
to the top of Calvary's hill,
I saw the lame walk, the dumb talk
giving glory to my father's will." - it carries imagery yet is pieced together very well into the rhyme scheme... "I saw the lame walk, I saw the dumb talk" might still have kept the rhythm a bit sharper but maybe I am reading it wrongly.

This poem is good... Just overrated: whether you agree or not, at least I am being fully honest and constructive.

    Amazing

Wow, what a gift of compassion, empathy and encouragement the Lord has blessed you with. I truly enjoyed reading this piece of work, for the voice was amazingly genuine and loving. The descriptions were vivid and captured the reader, bringing me deeper into the places that Christ walked; the piece also brought up memories of the Passion of the Christ, which definitely worked well in conjunction with the poem. Overall, wonderful poem, definitely a joy to read and some "blessed assurance" that I certainly needed to hear this morning. So thank you very much for your poem, and may the Lord bless you as you continue your writing! ^_^

(Just one suggestion, I'm not sure what spelling you are using, maybe it is a different linguistic variation, but I have always heard the road you are talking about spelled out like "Via Dolorosa". Just a suggestion, though.)

    Quill for salvation project

I compare this poem with the success of Passion of Christ, a movie directed by Mel Gibson that rocked and still rocks in the Christian and secular world alike. Reading it, I visualized the entire heartache and crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ. I was strengthened. I cried at times. Above all, I was reenergized to love Him more and heed His ways. Great job. However, Was 'harken' the right spelling or was it 'hearken'. Once again, wonderful work done here. Bravo!

Are you sure you don't want to proof & revise this yourself?

    Line 33 thieves mispelled.

    Line 44 no apostrophe needed.

A slightly smaller font would do okay.

Any further revision is up to you. The font seems to come up and hit the eyes to hard. Maybe a different style, in black?

    then went straight to Satan
crushing his neck with mighty foot,
grabbed the keys of hell and death

But on that third day I rose again
    a stone triumphantly rolled away,
the sun broke through with rays of light

This is really good. Nice accurate accounting of the crucifiction and ressurection. Well written.

When I first saw this on the featured poems, the title kind of threw me off and made me not want to read it. I'm glad I did.

The third is my favorite. It kind of hurts that Jesus was beaten to death to save me, but I am very grateful for it.

    Overall, great poem.

This really was a good write. I really loved your word-usage. Like an ancient text finally revealed . especially the last part, which you actually said like a billion times to me:
"So be of good cheer and fear not I say
on THIS day you too, can overcome,
all your fears, doubts and phobias
armed by word, spirit and love so awesome"

This actually gave me hope... I thank you for that, it was needed these last couple of days.
The rhymes, the flow, the word usage; everything is so perfect in this poem. It was great, a true masterpiece.

    Something to be proud of.

    Xx
