She sits before her mirror and slowly combs her hair.
Her lipstick carefully applied, soft rouge touched here and there.
She thinks she hears his footstep; heart quickening with joy.
At last he’s coming home to her, her darling soldier boy.
She knows he’ll keep his promise; he said “sweetheart wait for me”
Again she looks towards the door, she’s sure she hears his key.
A voice says “time for supper”. Hands smooth her silver hair.
She says “I hear him coming” as they help her to her chair.
It’s been so very long ago she’s forgotten all the pain.
In her heart she’ll go on waiting. She knows they’ll meet again.

I thought this piece seemed familiar... You entered it in a contest of my 6 months ago. But the fact I remembered it shows how moving this piece is. I'm glad you have re entered it because it suits the current prompt a lot tighter. I love this piece, it's thought provoking, it even made me cry a little. Thankyou for entering.

This is so beautiful and there must be thousands of elderly women who believe this. They will be with their beloved again. Too many widows from far too many conflicts.
