There is this place so deep within
a box so fragile and thin
As the days grow long, and I feel old
I visit my box of memories untold
Of other places, and other times
when I was in love and life was fine
Memories of my first kiss
and would I ever feel like this
When I lost my first love and had a broken heart
would I be able to recover to again start
My children being born and the love in my eyes
knowing that I had brought into the world such a wonderful life
Only the good memories are kept deep inside my secret box
I won't let the bad in I keep it locked
My special wedding day when I married my soul mate
and I knew that their was more to love than just hate
The look in our adoptive baby girls eyes
when I held her for the first time
So as I grow older and I grow weak
I just have to open my secret box, and take a peek
It takes me back to a place in time
of memories that have kept me from going out of my mind

This poem is about a very special place deep inside, a secret box that only the wonderful and special memories are contained. The rest of my abusive life I do not let in, I keep the box locked. When I feel that I cannot go on any longer I open this box and look inside, to see that their are such wonderful memories of my life too. Which helps me go on

What an amazing and healing secret place! I'm sure we all have one of these boxes, I know I do, I often go back to visit my grandma's house and garden back when I was a little girl and I still have special moments there so I empathise with your poem.

Very nostalgic... indeed I once heard it said that someone looking through our photo albums would assume we lived a happy life because no one takes a picture of anything they want to forget... but our lives are composed of both the good and the bad... and to deny the bad is to deny half of your existence... Think about that.
Either way... this was a beautifully nostalgic write, flowed very well, I really enjoyed it, I think everyone has a box like this, whether it be literal or other. I like to keep my memories inside.

What a wonderful way to keep those precious memories safe and keep out the nasties of life. Sometimes something pleasant from my past just pops into my mind, and I relive that precious moment for all it's worth.
Your secret box can be a treasure, too, as I see from your poem. We should all have that place within our hearts.

I have the opposite to your box...inside my mind is a cabinet and I file all the nasties in there and lock the drawer quick

o as I grow older and I grow weak.

I do not think it a weakness it is being human, being abused is not easy. For some who are not have special boxes they look in them when life gets hard. I love the reflective feel to the words you wrote. You put your joys of life into this work it has a feeling of gratide mix in with it.. Very well done.

I'm sorry to read in your author's note that you lead a life that entails abuse ~ I hope your secret place continues to give you strength and endurance ~ or maybe even the courage to get out of the situation somehow in the future.

Ahhhhhhhh, this is indeed sweet, like springtime poppies in the meadows of memories. Like fresh fallen snow on the soul and whispered sighs of lovers in the dark. All that and much more. very nice indeed.
For I can relate as I found not one but two soulmates, one ten years back and one last year. the first one surprised the hell outta me and the second one just shocked me totally.
I love them each as they are both very different women.
Funny thing is the one I have known for a decade keeps telling me the newer one is the one I need.
