Dusting the Bookshelf

A fantasy locked inside a picture frame
No room for outside photographs
Memories stored on a shelf below
Dust gathering on the one time happiness
These books containing secrets and lies
Piled high enough to keep the kids away
Imagination fell behind years ago
Too many distractions to remember to find it
Pages of heartbreak dampen whenever read
Our childhood favorites replaced by modern waste
Comedy and happiness traded for drama and dialogue
Checking every encyclopedia for the answers to our questions
Through the mess of the shelves collapsing
We have forgotten that this is fiction
Our pens have run dry and we have no desire to find more ink
A rewrite inconceivable
Are these the stories we want to tell our children
As we lay them into bed?
Goodnight sweet child
Beware of what lays ahead

I just want to make people think

Wonderful title you have chosen for this - it drew me in. You also address some fascinating issues within this piece which are really worth delving into so thanks for that. Not so sure about the last line as I keep wanting to read it as "beware of what lies ahead" rather than "lays" but that's probably just me. All in all, I think this is fab'. Well done.

I often have a problem sorting out bookshelves and I love this poem, because I could relate to this poem. I don't mean relating to the bookshelf, but to the sorting out. It certainly made me think.

And you have done that I have read this a few times and each time it leaves me with more to ponder over,
Thank you for waking my muse and making me think.
    well done

    And Think I Did!

I liked the theme of your poem. Try as we may to protect our children from the harsh realities of the real world, sometimes the harshness of life is within the very walls surrounding them. A very thought provoking write. Julie
