Out of the Darkness

Its humid and sticky here
As i look out across the desert
In the distance I hear gunfire
Another lost soul I fear

Friends and foe alike
Their eyes swelled and squinting
In the dust ladden sunlight
All wishing an end was near

Thoughts often carry back
to our distant land
of our friends and family
all wishing we were there

Nights are lonely
And desolate here
Minds playing tricks
As we stare into the darkness

All wishing it was daylight again
When the dawn crested the horrizon
The distant sounds grew near
Louder and louder  they began to grow

There was laughter and joy
As eyes filled with tears
I looked around wondering
What all the fuss was about

When I glimpsed out the corner of an eye
I knew then what bestowed us all
The progression of white trucks drew near
Our American RED CROSS was finally here

The ending of your poem gave me the feel of jubilation that one must feel at the moment of rescue. Thanks for sharing your poem with us and best of luck in the contest.

The ending gave me an overwhelming sense of joy that the speaker seemed to be experiencing. Simple, but the emotions were good and I thought it made for a great entry into our contest. Thanks for sharing

    Thank you for entering.

Good imagery here, I can actually feel myself in the situation you describe here. The title you have chosen is an excellent one for this particular poem, the last line brings the whole piece to a good conclusion tying in nicely with your title.

Well done and thank you for entering

    Amazingly Natural Flow of words

tell us of the war, pain, loss, hope, and the blessing recieved. Thank God for the Red Cross and many have felt just like you did. War can be hell on earth, but combat is totally wisked for all. You showed us yet another side of the war.....Great writing, keep them coming!...ennovy

Wonderfully penned and in such tragic context. But of course the Red Cross always tread where others fear to go.
Welcome to the site and thank you for this excellent entry

a thought-provoking piece. We all have an opinion of the war[s], but how often do we stop to think about the peripheral players, the relief workers...well done

    Thanks for your entry

Wow, I can only imagine the affect of seeing the Red Cross comming after having been living in such circumstances. This brings a tear to my eye. Just thinking about it. Your imagery is heart breaking yet out of it shines a ray of hope that is the Red and White of the Red Cross. Thanks for sharing.

Good luck in the contest and welcome to allpoetry. I encourage you to keep writing to read and comment.

    God bless

You have painted a desolute picture of a land I can say gladly I have never seen. I think the Red Cross is often like the sunrise, always a welcome part of everyday life.

Let the ink flow and your fingers dance
