Feel the adrenaline rush
through your veins,
Heart pounds out
So loud,
You can hear it throb
Gadong, Gadong,
GaDONG,
GADONG,
In your ears,
Dusts stirs,
No, it flies,
Wild and rampant,
Stomping hooves,
Then you see him,
His almost childlike face,
Pursed lips while nostrils flare
Wide open,
It's all wide open now.
Spinning, left, no right,
Back right, then left,
Up, down, down, up,
Then the twisting,
Frantically twisting,
And trying to hold on,
God!!!He's just gotta hold on
for just a little longer,
just 4 more seconds.
Forward, Backward,
Side to side,
Watch out for the horns!!!
He grits his teeth,
You know it's on then.
And the pounding,
The pounding in your chest
matches the pounding in his,
You can feel it, so can he!!!
Breathless, you watch
as he and the beast become
one.
His eyes squint,
Still not sure if it is from the dust,
Maybe it is from the intensity,
He blocks out the sound of the crowd,
and you,
But you know it is the only way
he can stay on,
just that one more second left,
and the dust is beginning to stick,
Thick and strong,
The crowd becomes silent
As he catapults through the air,
and lands with a thud.
Up he goes,
Like a jack in the box.
His arm stands in the air,
just like a flagpole,
waving his hat like a banner
in the sky.
He made another 8 second ride.

an entertaining read...you've captured the feel of the arena, the fans holding bated breath while the bullrider tries to stick to bull. A good read.

Brilliant!!
I've read lots of cowboy poetry over the years, i've never attempted it - thot 'bout it but then, i don’t chew, i cant spit and my only horse experience nearly kilt me...i do admire the format of most cowboy poetry. For me, there is an 'other worldly" feeling about it, that i am allowed to peek into this more authentic life of men and women who carve life out of harshness, 'make do' with the simple – admiration is what i feel about this poem, this view of life i will never really ever participate in, will always be an outsider no matter how many blue jeans i own or the style of my boot. I enjoy the adrenaline that is evoked here, the way i find myself sitting, standing, shouting gritting my teeth along side others who are completely captivated by this event. You have a marvelous sense of timing in the poem, the necessary conversational style of the cowboy poet – that, dear poet, you have down to perfection. Of all that marks cowboy poetry, it is the way it remains honest, simple and first hand – they are after all, story poems – views of life lived with passion and fervor. If this does not take a trophy, i will be greatly disappointed. Blessings and best wishes, ~richard
