Conundrum of the year
She keeps herself locked away
Eyes are shuttered, as is heart
Stark in contrast to these cooing lovies
Willing to share their lives with anyone
No-one can understand her attendance
They don't see the limelight in her soul
When they give her the script, though
She does not have to be herself
Eyes forward, brilliant blue
And her voice, with confidence
She is Helena
Solliloquy-the most they'd heard her speak
And they can hear the pain of one passed-over
She speaks her insignificance with her lines
Lights down, play's end
Her eyes jerk down
Not comfortable to be herself
But a pink flush upon her cheeks
For a very few moments
She had been more herself than ever
She had felt the freedom
She had felt the freedom of self-confidence.
Author notes
1) Write a personal poem about how your involvement in the arts has had a profound effect on you. Make it thoughtful and deep. Choose one art form.
- Music
- Dance
- Visual Arts
- Theater
(I chose theatre, obviously. I was always the shy girl in drama class!)
Just some translation of the british "lovies" (don't know if this slang exists in America...) it's what people like my dad refer to thespians as... especially those who call everyone "darling" (the men, that is)... it's just a particular type of actor. It isn't too important!

I can relate to this write, being shy, finding my confidence in my singing, yet still I am shy and don't like to sing front of alot of people even though now, these days I do know that I can sing...
I love the descriptions of feeling shy and alone, the flow and rhythm are good and the imagery is great..
I really like these lines...
"She keeps herself locked away
Eyes are shuttered, as is heart
Stark in contrast to these cooing lovies
Willing to share their lives with anyone
No-one can understand her attendance
They don't see the limelight in her soul"
a very well worded peice, well done!!
thank you for entering my contest and good luck.
peace and light always.. -
The subject is worthy of its print. I find the flow awkward and shifty. We all differ in our private selves and our public selves but the stage allows those of us more private to shine forth.

Great point in the cause. That art gives you confidence, even in the shyest of people. I was a drama student for a few semesters and was horrible at it. I am horrified of the stage. Which is why I stick to scripts and stagecraft. Yet, your piece thought a little unorthodox to the theme of this contest. It is non the less written well. It is descriptive and show the emotions that can come to a person taking acting and how they can become a little more alive when under that spot light. Suprising even those close to her.
Thank you for sharing. Good Luck in the contest.

Well, certainly a descriptive piece, bringing to mind someone very unlike myself, and yet ... not! For I was always the one whose life was the stage: bright bubbly friendly, but inside I was private and lonely, especially when surrounded by people!! I do think it is a tad bumpy, mostly in the early parts, but easily smoothed up to make this piece better, your call of course! Best of luck in this and all of your endeavors.

Inspiring
Very nice work here. I can relate deeply to the topic. I'm a musician myself and I've always been very shy but I became the piece when I was performing and found tremendous power in that. I also took an Acting for non majors class in High school and I was the shyest one. I found tremendous power in becoming another character and being confident in that. The class had a tremendous effect on me and started to transform me. The arts are all about expressive communication and there's so much power in that, especially for those of us who are quiet or shy. Very powerful message. Thanks for sharing it and best of luck in my contest. -
i really do enjoy this piece. it reminds me of not only myself, but alot of people i know.
we sit in the corner, everyone unaware of our being. and then when it's performing time, we can spill our hearts out through the arts, just to sit down and be unrecognized.
but the fact that we can release pain through things and do stuff that we love is truly amazing.
Just like this piece. i really really like it.
