Here is the road
Where I find my voice.
Where my soul recognises itself
once more
in the mirrors and still waters.
Here is the road where I gather
words like cosmos - flowers
to describe it.
Here in the dust, the warm dust are buried
intuitions
we left behind
somewhere on the road.
It is a river where
currents sing beneath you
in a red, dust and dusk colour
of a voice.
Here is the road where
all of humanity
pass by
with beloved strangers' faces aglow
in firelight
and the reflection
of the horizon
in their dark eyes.
Here is where we find freedom like
sunlight and clouds and
night-fire
on the road.
Here is the road where
dark birds fly
Out of shadowed folds
where all our words and memories
are written
on their feathers of smoke.
The road that breathes
endlessly asking
to follow it
to where
it will tell you
its secret
on the horizon.
More than fortune
more than consequence
Here is the road
more than a river.
It is
a ribbon of blood through me
that winds itself and binds
me
to tomorrow.
Here is the road.
Author notes
A lot of my early childhood memories are of travelling, and even now, as soon as we have an opportunity, my family travels. It is something that runs through my mind and heart constantly, and I admit, at times it can drive one crazy when one is trapped physically in a place like school, while one's heart is at its true home.
Something that inspired me to express this in poetry is the last verse of Moniza Alvi's poem, "The Sari" :
"Eventually
they wrapped and wrapped me in it
whispering 'Your body is your country'"
Note: Cosmos is a type of flower that grows commonly on the roadside in South Africa.
