Queen

She held the yellowed nylon fabric up to her nose,
It smelled clean, it smelled like fabric,
It reminded her of when she was eight,
And nine, and ten,
When she would dress-up as the Queen.
“I remember this,” she said “But it smelled different,
It smelled like an old trailer that had been abandoned for years,
It smelled like memories and stinging mold,
Yes, I remember this.”
She held it out,
And the purple cloth seemed to glisten.
She smiled,
And wrapped it around her fingers.
She liked the feel of smoothness
As it glided over her skin,
“Let’s play dress-up!” she said,
And danced away holding the blue cloth out behind her.
Like wings it fluttered in the wind,
And rustled the particles of air around the silky white cloth she held aloft,
“I’ll be the Queen,” she whispered, and smiled.

I love the way scent is associated with memory here. The other day I got a whif of pipe glue and it reminded me of my dad..he did sprinkler systems and always had that on his fingers. It's the smell I remember most about him.

Funny how a smell can rekindle a memory your words with the imagery set before me visual pictures in my mind as you direct my thoughts i feel this person to be older reliving 'dress-up' through a child's mind through an innocence I think many young girls would have like to dream of being the queen in a bygone era. I see this memory in the post days of WWII . Thank you for the pleasure of the play I saw.Good luck in the contest
