Oh well, free verse:
You kept me hanging on,
at the end of a telephone;
those wires hissing with static.
Vacant on the other side,
'the caller has cleared',
it kept saying.
Gone, number withheld...
...waited for you to try again,
picked up the receiver to
check - nothing, just a dial tone.
Rhyme:
You kept me hanging on the phone,
listening to the endless drone.
The wires hissing with static,
a recorded announcement - automatic -
you are in a queue, holding...
...call is important, connecting.
Through to the wrong department,
transferring, sent to another compartment.
We value our customers, revered...
...then that sound- the call has cleared.
