There’s a place I’ve been
Wandered to
Happened upon
Where grow the roots of
My ancestry
Often I’ve arrived
Round a bend
Over a rise
Where shade is cast by
My ancestry
Escape as I might
Forget as I do
Always it waits
The embracing arms of
My ancestry

I enjoyed reading this poem. The message is clear and your words are really beautiful. Repeating the last line in each strophe was a little distracting (for me); perhaps changing the title to Ancestry would give you the opportunity to use the last line of each stanza a bit differently. It’s just a suggestion – you’ve done well in the contest so I may be totally off base here.
Kindest regards,
Helen

Embracing, or smothering? Seriously, this is a really cool poem. I like the way it wound around, simple but profound. It's lovely without being obscure, which isn't something that's easy to pull off. I've never really thought of my ancestry as something to embrace--or to allow to embrace me--so it's definitely a thought-provoking read.

this is how I feel about my ancestry. It's always been so in my face and I have tried to escape its shade at times but basically, I'm proud of it and it's always there. In everything I do, I'm reminded of it. Am I getting this? I like the gentle rhythm of this poem and the three stanzas seem significant in representing the three stages of life and the three generations that are usually, hopefully, around for each other.

Thanks. You give me far too much credit with things such as the "three stages of life", but I did feel a need for three stanzas here. Not sure why. I think I was trying to show the different ways that family persists in one's life.
