A Year and a Day
Lie with me in the cinnamon toast dawn
when the world holds its breath
and let this moment be enough.
Remember. I have loved you, I love you, I will love you.
Once a wish, twice a truth,
three times a vow for all eternity.
And if the time of parting should come
and leave you bound to this place
hold fast the promises that know no unraveling.
Mourn me then for a year and a day.
Give me a winter of reckoning,
a hurricane gale of grief.
Hear my name in the sleepy chirrup
from the spring nest in the untamed bush
outside our bedroom window.
See my smile in the little red haired girl of two or three
who looks back over her shoulder to catch your eye
as she runs into the sunlight at a noisy summer picnic.
Catch my song against your cheek as it is born aloft in autumn
and handed like a treasure from tree to tree to tree.
Sing then no lament; sing joy in its remembrance.
Then you must push these things aside,
or at least let them fade as they will wish to.
Open your spirit to comfort and kindness without chiding or remorse.
Let loose the fiddle strings that bind your heart.
Make of then a child’s plaything
to occupy a quiet corner.
Cease to look for me in faces that must shine for themselves alone.
Love another who does not look like me,
or walk like me, or spin my dreams.
A year and a day, love.
Then in a tinkerbelle moment of sapphire twilight
I will give your lips an angel's kiss and say goodbye.
Lie with me in the cinnamon toast dawn
when the world holds its breath
and let this moment be enough.
Remember. I have loved you, I love you, I will love you.
Once a wish, twice a truth,
three times a vow for all eternity.

Hi Mariposa
Nice poem! You seem to work those fiddle strings in in the most propitious places!LOL I guess musicians are wont to, and have license to, do those sorts of things!LOL
Beautiful narrative!
Is it a girl thing? LOL I could never get this descriptive if you were to give me a month of Sundays to do it in.
Hope you are well.

Exquisite!
This is pure poetic genius! you have such a natural way with words, the unexpected flows tantilizingly from your pen creating moments of joy for your reader.
I love the lines:
"Once a wish, twice a truth,
three times a vow for all eternity."
I could go on citing so many more
I feel the title you have chosen for this particular write says so much, it is almost a seal or guarantee, allowing for someone to taste and see that your word is as good as your bond.
I am so pleased I saw this and came to read it, thank you for sharing these beautiful thoughts.
