Owl-Sonnet (English Sonnet)

Missing image

To you, who watches every step I take
I offer these few lines that crossed my mind
My spirit is asleep while you’re awake
And while you see, my eyes are fully blind

Oh creature of the night, I bow to thee
Will you bestow your wisdom’s precious spark
Upon my weary mind, so I may see
Without the use of vision in the dark

Reveal the hidden secrets that now sleep
Within the lap of darkness – the unknown
And let the fruit of knowledge gently reap
Reserve a seat for me on wisdom’s throne

Oh gentle owl, my spirit-guide, my muse
May wisdom’s nectar patiently infuse

I like the direction you went with this. I can see where you look to Owl for guidance. I like the contrast between your sleep and Owl's waking time. Thank you for entering, good luck!

Flawless meter! I really liked the 2nd stanza, for seeing without the eyes is a skill/gift that too few have or utilize . . . imagine if we were all so blessed to be able to see beyond the obvious. Thanks so much for entering my contest!

    Outstanding

I liked the way you have created opposites in the poem a technique that you find a lot in Elizabethan poetry. This flows beautifully and I liked the symbolic image of the owl. A lovely sonnet to read.

thank you so much for your voice and kind comment, dear lamia ... indeed, there are different sonnet-forms (english, petrarchan, spenserian etc.) I just used the traditional rules of the english sonnet, which is an abab cdcd efef gg rhyme scheme and a iambic pentameter ... jm kenyon (genielassie) has published a great column about sonnet-forms, if you enjoy sonnets, it could be a source of inspiration for you ... here's the link : http://allpoetry.com/list/25619-Sonnet-Form-Columns

I am in an "animal-medicine-spirit-guide-phase" right now ... thanks to celticmoon's inspiring contest ... since somebody had already adopted "owl", I felt that I had to write a tribute to her ... and lucky I was to find a contest whose host asked for form-poetry, which is a source of joy for me, when I write it ...
      thank you, dear brother ...

Sweet watcher who absorbs each step the dance
may take in flight, in rest, insight in all,
reap now all years of patience to advance -
there's neither sleep nor waking, rise nor fall.

There is no bow to bend, but bow whose dart
bestowed may spark the inner eye of love,
peep now, false fears dissolve, solved whole and part,
while vision's shared with tit and turtle dove.

The fruit of knowledge should be shared - partake
to heart's desire, inspiring others, Way
precludes all reservations some would make, -
shake out your lungs, song sung itself sheds ray.

Who wisdom wills will find perchance that light
springs not from muse but inner wings for flight ...
