because
he left
when I was just ten
my mother lost
her husband
while we six
children
missed our father
my youngest brother
just two days old
when a roll over
killed
this man
just days before
his 40th birthday
no dad, just
a mom in control
caused me
to know
there was nothing
I could not do
I have never
looked back,
except
to miss him
over and over again
Author notes
I have written many poems about the death of my dad and how my mom continued to raise us six kids by herself. This is another one.

Wonderful
Great to see so many appreciative comments on your submission. Brought tears to my eyes. I also was the oldest of six children, but with a step father, never knew my own and such is life.
Thank you for the nostalgic sharing of this about your life.

How sad, but still very touching. Though you say you write a lot about your dad, I also see a little something about your mother in here as well. I suppose it's hard to write about one without writing about the other in some way or another. Thanks so much for entering.

excellent penning...
Hi granny, I am another one that has already read and commented on this poem before but it seems to have vanished, those gremlins are about again
This is a great write and I'm sorry you lost your dad so young and your mum having to bring you all up on her own, it doesn't seem fair, but she did a lovely job and you are the proof, such a lovely spirit you are
You will never stop missing him and I always think grief is worse when that person we love is taken too early...he was very young, but his memory is in your heart and poetry...thank you for this wonderful poem to read
Love and smiles

I think I read and commented on this one before, sorry I burned your points. Just read "Daddy" by Sylvia Plath last week, whose father also died when she was ten. Unlike this positive and inspiring write on the loss, she was MUCH more bitter and angry. interesting how tragedy effects people differently. well done granny.

Aw Granny, I am so sad to hear of this loss at such a young age. If you are anything like me, the hurt, bitterness and every emotion under the sun comes out in your poetry. Time is supposed to be the great healer but there are just some things that don't ever go away. God bless you today and always. Good luck in the contest. Val

A strong good strong soul, your mom has. I'm betting that runs in the family. Good solid write.

A wonderful heartfelt write and strong tribute to your mother and your life. Amazing how we survive hardships in life which seem to make us who we are and often stronger people for it.
Very sad lose at such a young age, which you have written so well.
Nicely done!

Well Done
grannyeri,
This is a beautiful tribute to your amazing Mother who despite the hardships, single-handedly raised some strong and appreciative children.
This also is a rememberence of a father, who left the scene all too suddenly but was not to be forgotten.
This personal glimpse of your background is a thoughtful, sober write of defining moments of your life.
Well Done!

You write these memories of your mom and dad so beautifully, I have said before how sorry I am, it just doesn't seem enough.... but she raised you right and look at you now....

A beautiful heartfelt write and presentation. Good flow and tone. Your love for your father and how much you miss him is implied deeply in this piece. Deep expression of emotion. Very good word choice. A well crafted piece.

Some women are very strong and can do what others would shake in their knees even to think about. You have a strong example of your Mom for this. This poem is full of the power of a woman very well expressed. May God bless this lovely strong lady.
All the best,

This is sweet, heartfelt, emotional... Its funny how the things that happened to us as children always seem to make us stronger as we grow. I love this poem, excellent job and best of luck in the contest.

Great job!
Good job of conveying both the hardships that your family endured, and also the pain of missing your Father. I enjoyed reading this piece. Best wishes in the contest! Debi

This truly made my heart ache. It is amazing how one can walk past strangers in the street and never know what has happened in their lives, the pain that they have gone through. Thank you so much for sharing this.
