Compassion Is...

What absolute compassion is
I dare not say, for I do not know.
But I do know what compassion is not.

Compassion for your fellow man,
Does not consist of these,
watching idly, afraid to help,
When someone is in need.

In Sierra Leon, as wars rage on,
Fueled by blood diamonds,
The price: two hands, two lives,
Too real; but still we buy them...
Is this out of greed?

In Darfur oil wells are new,
Old homes are left forgotten,
The path to refugue littered,
With broken bodies of all
young and old, men and women.

In India children roam the streets,
Starving, dirty, smelly little thiefs,
No home to go to,
No parents to see
Forever numbers increasing

In Colombia, toiling in the deadly fields,
Scores of people farming gold
Gold in the form of poison
Poison in our modern world.

In China, many mothers weep,
For their child they cannot keep,
The harsh reality set in place,
Makes this seem like a closed case.

Everywhere around the world,
people shudder, people freeze,
Nothing good will come I'm sure,
Too many homeless, Too many you see
I cannot distinguish them from me.

Do we truly have compassion?
Or is compassion thrust upon us?
Like a mighty deed we must complete.
Not real compassion, I don't believe,
But compassion out of greed.

For what true compassion is,
Not a single soul knows.

ignorance breeds apathy in this situation,
you have something important to say and you should scream it from the rafters, people need to know, If anyone is still listening.
    Moving, great job

Great poem. Truly sad, because it is true. The answer is to begin with compassion for those you meet today and those you have some power over. Show them compassion and we have a beginning.

A very powerful message and well maid as well. We need more outspoken people. Perhaps it will goad some of us to action and to abandon our comfortable luxury lined shells and see the suffering of others around us. Thanks for entering and good luck.
