For The Love Of Music

She was looking through
her old music books
remembering the years
of lessons she took.
She found her last piece,
a bright Sonatina,
in her heart she returned
to the music arena.

She recalls the passion
of musical days
as her fingers stroke keys
of ivory they play.
Her eyes are a daze,
she is lost in her thought
and her fingers play on
as once they were taught.

The little Sonatina
comes to an end.
She smiles as she closes
the door to her friend.
The love of music
always brings pleasure
but to play the piano
is something she treasures.

Author notes

I've always loved the piano and enjoyed a few years of lessons as an adult. My husband bought my piano for me when we moved to California in 1975. Our daughters each took lessons on the piano for several years.

Nice and sentimental piece of poetry bringing to me sound of Sonatina. Nice composed poem.

I also love and play the piano. I sometimes play for hours; which feels like minutes. Love this has great flow, so easy to read. Very well done, dear poet.

Thank you so much for reading and I'm glad you enjoyed the poem. The poem was written as I played my piano for the last time. We gave the piano to my daughter and her (then) husband in the anticipation of any future grandchildren learning to play. Both of our daughters played, but this daughter was the only one married. The marriage ended, my daughter was left with an infant and the need to sell their house and buy a smaller home. The piano wouldn't fit in the new house...so she sold it, with our blessings. The good news is that a couple bought the piano for their two young daughters who were learning to play...and I hope they're enjoying that piano every single day! Thank you for the very nice comments.

    Lovely

I truthfully have to say I hated taking piano lessons. LOL. I just could not seem to read the notes. I was about 11 years old when I started lessons. After awhile when they saw I was playing by ear they let me go. I like your poem of how you enjoy playing the piano. It has a lot of imagery to it. Your flow and tone is a pleasure to read. Message and presentation beautifully written. Very nice poem.

Ok, well normally, I wouldnt consider the plurals as perfect rhymes to the singles (days-play) but I like this piece. The only thing I really notice is 3rd vs, "The love of music" doesn't flow... too few syllables. There might be more, but the rest flows better.

Alex, thank you for your thoughts and comments. I think the way I read the poem aloud I seem to have pauses that make up for lost syllables...if that makes any sense! I suppose I could change it to: "for the love of music"...what do you think? Carolyn

And that's why I hate not being able to see right away who entered the poem.... Didn't know it was you! That line... it just seems like it should have 2 extra syllables, to be the same as the first line of the verse "the li-ttle son-a-ti-na" so... something like "the love of all her mu-sic"... that's how I try reading it. Just a suggestion though!

Yes, I have gotten quite a number of good entries, a few really well done sonnets with iambic pentameter, some creative styles, a (almost) Spenserian poem... (he messed up a little). Take care,
            Alex
