The Man in the Middle

From the very beginning I was an outcast.
Since I was never accepted by humans or demons I had no one to play with.
The humans made fun of my ears and stayed away from me out of fear.
They would run away from me and hide until I was out of their sight.
The demons always picked on me because they saw me as a weakling.
They snickered nonchalantly the term half-breed as I walked by.

Although I didn't know what they meant by half-breed, the stigma tore at my very core.
When I was alone the tears would flow down my face.
Feelings of worthlessness and anger circulated throughout my body.
Loneliness is all I knew and from that moment on I knew I could only trust in my own power.
To get through each day I trained hard in physical combat.
Along the way I fought a lot of opponents and mastered the Tetsusaiga.

I also met a woman named Kikyo, a priestess, who was entrusted to protect the sacred jewel of four souls.
She was an excellent archer and had several sacred arrows in her possession.
At first I didn't really like her, the only thing I wanted was the jewel so I could transform into a full-fledged demon.
I hung around her just so I could be close to the jewel and when she would fall asleep then I will steal it from grasp.
She knew that my motive was selfish but there was something about me that drew her in.
Maybe it was something in the air or nature had a hold on us but we soon fell in love.
I promised her that with jewel I would transform into a human and she would no longer be burdened with carrying out her duty as the protector of the jewel.

However the love that brought us together was cheapened by a nasty individual named Naraku.
He disguised himself as both Kikyo and myself and turned the affection we had for each other into hate.
He killed Kikyo but not before she used a sacred arrow to pin me to a tree where I slept for a long time.
An anime Rip Van Winkle who woke up because another woman yanked out the arrow.

Her name is Kagome and she is the spitting image of Kikyo.
So naturally when I opened my eyes to see her I had an instant dislike for her.
I mistook her for Kikyo and said she had her odor on her.
However I noticed that her aim was not as good as my lover Kikyo.
On numerous occasions I made fun of her ability.

Unfortunately for me Kaede, Kikyo's sister, who is an old bat when I met Kagome put a special necklace on me.
The word that made me fall into submission was the word sit.
Purposely and accidentally Kagome uttered it and that riled me up.
On our journey we met a lecherous monk named Miroku, a demon slayer named Sango, a fox demon named Shippo, and an annoying flea named Myoga.

On some of the outings that my new friends and I went on there was the love of my life Kikyo.
Every time I saw her my heart skipped a beat.
The problem was Kagome and I became really good friends.
In that time I also developed special feelings for her.
I cared deeply for both women and when pressed by Miroku, Sango and Shippo, I got embarrassed and tried to evade the question.
Kikyo is a part of my past that I can not just forget.
We shared many close intimate memories that can never be erased.
Kagome, who is identical to Kikyo in appearance, has made my life better for knowing her as well.

The concept of love is not easy for me to embrace, unlike Miroku that lecherous idiot.
Every time I attempt to say the word my mouth feels like it is stuffed with peanut butter.
The mental images are disturbing enough without the constant nudging.
To choose between my past and present is unbearable and unthinkable for me in my current state.
It would be like asking a rich person would you like the new Jaguar or a Limousine.
Both high end models that are classy and make you feel better about yourself for traveling with each one.
So as the jackhammer in my head keeps grinding with constant nagging from my friends to make a choice, I remain in neutral as the man in the middle.

Author notes

3 and Pie.  One of my favorite anime shows is Inuyasha.  I feel for Inuyasha because he is tuck between his past and his present.  He never asked for his love life to be center stage.  But his friends Miroku, Sango, Shippo and Myoga to a lesser degree prod Inuyasha to make a choice.  For Inuyasha, he can't get a moment's peace with this hanging over him.  So he remains stuck between a rock and hard place.
