Grey, bulbous clouds marbled with
white and crimson capture the sky.
The sun obscured, a soft even ruby
halo disclosing its concealment.
Taupe sand sculpted by tempestuous
wind, mounds and hollows play the
light revealing its tortured path.
Pinnacles splashed with monochromatic
brush captured in a sepia print, sculpted
into unique forms. Some, overcome by
burdens unknown, rest resignedly, lay
wearily on the shifting, sweeping sand.
An eeriness drowns the scene, a
suffocating quietness conquers
my senses. This strange place,
this strange sensation, almost a
feeling of loneliness, of gloominess.
No. more, of being adrift, floating
isolated and uncertain of bearings.
Indigenous people tentatively walk,
heads bowed in quiet they follow,
single file. Furtive glances to the strange
formations. To them beings once alive,
departed now but their spirits remain, an
influence on their lives they still maintain.
With deference, they carefully follow
one after the other through this strange
place. This place where spirits peer
from stone, where one is never alone.
Author notes
Nambung National Park, Western Australia, is unique in that it is composed primarily of stone pinnacles creating an unworldly vista.

Please be honest, whilst stroking my ego is nice it does not help me grow as a writer. If you have any constructive criticism or positive suggestions on how to improve my work please let me know.
