Behind The Mask

I use the mask to hide my face,
To disguise what I am,
To veil the secret heart of me
And hide my secret soul
I hide behind grim facades,
Walls built high and thick
Unable to let others in
Unable to escape
I find myself alone with me
Dancing in the dark
Unable to see beyond myself
Or tell man and mask apart
Where do I begin and façade end?
What is stone and what is flesh
I have become so many lies
And still give more deception breath
I cannot speak the truth of me
Tear down these graffiti covered walls
I am lost behind the shadow of a mask
Unable to perceive my soul

Now too my perception of the beyond dims,
How many who speak, speak their minds,
And how many hide like me?
Is it you that I see, and you that I hold,
Or are you too, secretly another
And is it still you that I love,
Or has your mask become my lover
How many faces I look upon are faces false?
How many eyes are made of glass,
Is your fair visage what it seems
How deep into your soul do glimpses pass?

I am lost in a world of the masquerade,
Where nothing is what it seems
And faces are made of paper and glass
People hiding where the world can’t find them

Author notes

masquerade, paper faces on parade
Masquerade, hide your face
so the world can't ever find you

Took this poem from the above lines for Fantom of the Opera, this one is for Analexii, my best AP "Friend"

thanks for changing the title. this was beautiful, and so sad. i love the lines:

    Unable to see beyond myself
Or tell man and mask apart

that really got to me. great job, and good luck.
p.s. phantom of the opera is one of my favorites!

You are so full of it Lee! Shame on you for making such a mockery of the "Fantom" of the opera. (It's Phantom by the way, Genius)

thanks for entering my contest, but unfortunately it doesn't follow the rules. it needs to have the title 'Behind the/my mask'. you can either change the title, or enter a new poem. thanks
