Behind my mask

Missing image

Behind my mask,
one of many I've carved to fit each demand and occasion,
my eyes feebly flare with charades of feigned dedication.

Jester, is my favorite face,
for it inspires so many smiles
so no one can sense my third degree burns,
from the acid of self-inflicted disgrace.

At work, a puppet's head covers
my soul-sick ashen membrane of emptiness,
playing the game with racing tongues darting lies
only my mirror will ever admit or surmise.

In between dress rehearsals
for dreams that never come true,
I don the drone, moronic facade of sub-existence,
succumbing to the rituals of "bend over" humiliation,
in hopes of gleaming a few meager silver crumbs of putrid esteem,
my stomach swallows
though it slices at my conscience like a laser beam.

In my closet where I really dwell,
all my masks are kept that I've learned to wear so well.
Lost in the wake of wearing them at times
is the inner truth of where my identity truly shines.
Perhaps, another day I will embrace the task
to truly see the face I've hidden,
behind my mask.

    this is rather frightening

It's beautiful, because It's so verry true for many people. I'm sure that every one can connect to this poem on some level. It's truely a wonderful job. I like how you brought it to a close. The message in your last few lines is realy hard hitting.
    nice work.
    =) mary

i like your description of the different masks. it's so easy to change who we are in order to be accepted in the different circles of our life.
    great job, and good luck!

I feel we all wear masks within our daily lives. They are like sheilds hiding the true identity,,,but a watchful eye and one who knows you well, can always see beyond the mask. They know that you are more than the superficial face that you expose but a spirit full of much more. An intriquing poem you have wirtten here.
