~ * ~ * ~
Codie is my company
When no one else is there.
She sits near by and waits,
She'll protect me anywhere.
She'll bark at all intruders
Who enter our front yard,
She'll charge a man, a dog, or cat,
And she'll chase them hard.
Indeed she can sit and stay,
Can back up on my command.
Certainly not her least quality
Is her response to a loving hand.
But it's when I'm sad and lonely,
That she really shines.
A single sniffle from my nose,
Or sigh from me that whines,
With no hesitation,
She leaps up to my side,
Puts her face against my cheek,
Licks my tears as they slide.
She puts her paw on my leg,
With soulful eyes she seems to see,
As a forever friend,
Every hurt that is inside of me.
~~ ~~
She is growing older now
Her legs and eyes not as they used to be,
She can no longer jump into the car
Or chase her favorite Frisbee.
But when she hears the back door,
Hears our footsteps as we come home,
She still struggles to her feet
And kisses each one of us some.
I know that in all the world
There is one being I can trust
To be there when I need her,
Having Codie has been a must.

First let me say that your dog is beautiful. Your poem is equally as beautiful. It shows that dog is truly man's best friend. Great job, thaks for entering my contest and good luck.
