Each morning I wake up with joy in my heart,
Looking forward to my day ahead
Even though it's a bit warm here.
Not many people have a job which pays well
And which gives them orgasmic pleasure
And all at the taxpayer's expense, yippee yi yay.
Work for me is not work: it is happiness,
It's joyful and uplifting happiness.
I love to abuse my power so much.
I love my life from the morning moment
I put my pompous uniform on to sleepy-time
But it is quite hot here.
What is my job? Surely you can guess?
Go on, have a go! Yessiree!
I am a soldier in the invading Army in Iraq!
Rest assured that you and all the nice folks
Back home can rest easy because of me
And my brave comrades in blood-letting.
All those foreigners out there are plotting
To destroy dear old Uncle Sam -
Bang! Bang! Bang! O holy f*ck, one of my buddies
Just got shot stone dead, but I never liked him.
And I'll go out and take revenge on some unsuspecting Iraqis
O what a brave boy I am.

This is a hard one to swallow, I can feel the sarcasm, but it is full of bitter and anger also. Makes a total different view from that point of maybe some soldiers out there truly feel and think about. Good piece and congrats of the trophy win.

Soldiers deserve the deaths they dole out to others. May God curse them to eternal Hell.

That's good, that is.

Again, I love it
But kindly work on your form.

Vicious and cruel- Oh, such a narrow view of the possibilities of sarcasm... I see you chose the usual liberal shlog for your prize winner...

I would refer you to an article in The Guardian (online @ http://guardian.co.uk/Iraq ) - the artcle is entitled "Carnage...." You may find it interesting reading.

This is a charming piece of writing. I have read wittier things on gravestones. You know you will win this contest, however. Have you seen the others?

MOVING
I am disturbed by this writing, is this your true feeling of all our sons and daughters serving?
I would ask if you ever served?
i do not deny there are some who joined to kill "rag heads" . i know some and it offends me. wether it was krauts, nips, slopes, gooks, reds ... all are human and have the same right to live as i do. but i know most serve with a sense of duty and honor.
i dd like the thoughts and meter of this. just not happy how you put all into this category.

I find the phrase "serve with honour" sad and laughable. "Be profitably employed playing with guns for money" is a better description. America's obsession with guns and violence has again scored an own goal with the killings at a Virginian university. When will you learn?

I find your phrase "Be profitably employed playing with guns for money" even more laughable. Many that serve in the US military do it because their other choices are rather dismal. I think many see it as a way to gain some skills and yes, serve their country.
I agree, the Iraq war is bullshit, we don't belong there. But those in uniform get a very raw deal, and risk coming home in a bag, or at the very least, with major mental health issues to deal with. It's the civilian contractors who make big dough. The lower ranks of the services get squat.
This poem is funny because it paints Iraq as a great place to be.
Though I do here the buffet is filling.
If the draft ever came back to this country, we would say - "run, son, run!" -

It is shocking that you didn't win a gold prize for this one. It is very good indeed. If I ever get round to holding a contest, be sure to enter this and I will give you one.

A charming piece of literature that will surely go down in the big book of books that are big.
