the light of a beautiful glittering star
shines in the dark of a roach-ridden cave
oh darling, tell me where you are
and together we can both be saved
beneath the dank and dripping death
and the echoes of a ghost's lost love
there lies a girl with one last breath
that she's saving for a life above
hello? he calls, lost in the maze
blinded by the lack of light
he stumbles over monsters, dazed
as his bones begin to chill with fright
she cannot move; she cannot breathe
as she listens for a sound
she prays inside for the chance to leave
this monster's lair beneath the ground
his steps are growing louder yet
and her heart begins to swell with hope
he quickly approaches where she is kept
but trips and falls down the slippery slope
she hears him fall; all hope is lost
as he tumbles into the tomb
they are together, but at what cost?
together they will meet their doom
he will not give up; he will persevere
he tugs at the chains binding her wrists
though it burns, she will not shed a tear
and though time passes, still he persists
his hands scour the muddy floor
as he searches for a key
he is tired, his body is sore
but he will not stop until she is free
finally, there is something deep in the mud
her chains he struggles to unlock
they drop to the ground with a dull thud
and she stands and shakily tries to walk
suddenly, they are not alone
and their hearts begin to race
he grabs her hand as they hear a groan;
the monster has awakened to a chase
he pulls her up the steep, steep hill
the monster close behind
its horrible screams, sharp and shrill,
speak of a day when both are confined
they sprint together, farther and faster
with no idea where to go
what began as a rescue is now a disaster
and finally their pace began to slow
no longer could they hear the screams;
the monster had stopped chasing its prey
so both sunk into despairing dreams
wishing in sleep for the light of day
he awoke, covered in sopping sand,
with a new idea of how to get out
cautiously he took her hand
and they set off on his route
the answer came to him while he was asleep
and before long, there was a speck of light
though the darkness was still deep
the girl saw the dawn to her endless night
the mouth of the cave was at their feet
and behind was the darkness coated with death
she felt the sunlight, soft and sweet
and, truly alive, took her first breath.
