A Soulmate, My Fondest Dream

To be the soulmate of another
human heart, will be my fondest dream
I need it so,
I want it so, but so illusive it has been

To know everything and share everything
the good and bad the same,
every inch of skin, every dimple, every thought
before it’s said.

Or, spending hours, countless
understanding the good, the flawed,
the nooks and sleeks,
connecting every freckle, I’d be in awe

Whispering in the dark to understand every detail…
would mean everything to me…
breathes life into me.
I would never.. breathe betrayal

Maybe I’d just listen and smoke a cigarette or two
Sometimes best intentions don’t require speech,
sometimes they do

I’d fill my empty time with your smile, and  flashing eyes
that brighten up my day, and to me, could never lie

Thoughts of you would dance with me throughout my busy day
and I’d smile each night, thinking of you, as I knelt in pain, to pray

I am not a perfect man, though striving for perfection,
but together, hand and hand, we would reach an introspection

And the two of us, as Eleanor and Franklin grew together
would live each moment… as if our last
and ride out stormy weather

And, some day when sands have slipped the tide
of mortal life’s endurance
they would sing a song that praised us both
to garner reassurance
.
.

I liked this a lot. I think through the years you become a bit jaded to this soulmate thing. Then a poem comes along that makes you stop... wistful and think of those dreams you had as a child. Very nicely done.

This is lovely. I enjoyed reading it - indeed you and I share a dream to find a soulmate.. if only .. ahhh.. My favourite lines were

Whispering in the dark to understand every detail…
    would mean everything to me…
    breathes life into me.
    I would never.. breathe betrayal

    Congratulations!

As I only ever written one poem, I'm not in a position to sit in judgemnt on yours! Purely from a layman's point of view though it's a smashing poem and I've told my sister-in-law on Skye (Scotland), to read it. She's much more of a poet than I'll ever be. I certainly wish I had some of yor word-craft skills. Well done.

WOW. That is about all I can think when I finish reading this, every time. This matches so closely to what I believe a soul mate of the romantic kind should be, and yet I think this could simply be a deep and loving friendship just as easily. There are no demands here...just an openness I find extremely touching and heartfelt. Several lines in the poem cut straight to my heart, including (but not limited to) :

"Sometimes best intentions don’t require speech,
    sometimes they do"

"Thoughts of you would dance with me throughout my busy day
and I’d smile each night, thinking of you, as I knelt in pain, to pray"

"I am not a perfect man, though striving for perfection,
but together, hand and hand, we would reach an introspection"

    Just...beautiful.

Thank you once again for your entry in the contest...this is a poem I will most certainly be looking at again and again.

    All the best,
    ~J.

      Dear Trista,
Thanks so much for hosting this contest. I think it was therapeutic for me to put in words my thoughts about what it is I’m looking for in a soulmate. Loved reading the diversity of thoughts on the subject by the other authors and loved all the poems! As you know, I don’t inter contests as a rule, but this idea, what is a soulmate, what does it mean to me, struck a cord within me. Thanks for the gold trophy win, and again, thanks for hosting such a lovely contest. Bob

this piece is as good as it gets when describing a Soulmate. Honest, open and heartfelt.

'I am not a perfect man, though striving for perfection,
but together, hand and hand, we would reach an introspection'

These lines say what a soulmate should be, well done.

    Captivated my spirit

This poem is so similar to what I want to achieve in life. Although as human beings we may be rich in material things in life, to be truly "rich" I believe this is what we need to find, soulmates. Beautiful work. Bravo.

    Thankyou ...

Reading this has just reminded me how very lucky a human being I am to have found the soulmate of my dreams in she who I write about in my own works. You have so well described what I feel, and how we are when we are together, it is simply uncanny ... everything bar those nasty things called cigarettes ... That line pulled you back to a 9.8 from me.
Well done ... look out J, this bloke's closing in on you...
