My Epiphany

"I guess we're adults now,"
Her email said.
Its simplicity belying
The epiphany
It had uncovered.

I guess I'm an adult now.
Bills arrive on the 3rd,
Laundry is done on Tuesdays,
I make dinner for two after work.

I guess I'm an adult now.
30 hours a week on schoolwork
24 hours at work
7 hours commuting.

I guess I'm an adult now.
Spouting Russian
Writing essays
Diligently taking notes.

I guess I'm an adult now.
Weekends spent at home -
$3.65 in my bank account
Bills arrive on the 3rd.

Its so different to have "adult" things on my mind - credit card payments, sofa beds, vacuuming! It was only when Josh and I sent out all our invites for people to come visit that we realized (via an email from his cousin) that ... we're adults. Well, he's been an "adult" for a few years, but not me. In response to seeing myself turn into my mother (in some ways) I wrote this.
