Silent Seer, open wide as night-half world,
tell me truths you see, filtered by tufts.
First fire still burns in your eyes:
Dreams softened by ancient feathers.
Shape-shifted messages sounded through woods
carry a thousand thousand religious teachings
scattered on floor of Mother Earth
by those scuttling to find a way to answers
of why
and who.

Congrats
The first and last lines take my breath away. To finish this as you did is remarkable. To use the who, yet avoid cliche or give it away early was, to my mind, a read accomplishment.
Spending so many evenings in the trees, I spend much time with the owls. We have both great gray, and great horned ones. I have a biologist/falconer friend that kept a great horned owl for years after it was injured.
He never did take to me and took his due in blood nearly every time I handled him.lol. I did, however, admire his "tude".lol.
This is simply the best writing I've read on the subject of owls, with the spiritual simplicity and depth of a Black Elk story or a description of bird by a drum. Just wonderful.

My Grade Ten English teacher raised a great white from a chick that had fallen out of its nest. It was so loyal to him. it, liek Mary's lamb, followed him to school and would sit up by the artifical bell tower to follow him home after school. They built a new home and were afraid the owl, who perched on the front railing, would not follow them. But, of course it did, because it was him it was folowing. It sat on the new railing, by his lounge chair while he died of cancer. When he died, it left, never to return. Can you imagine such a loyal powerful keeper? Its tolerance was the same...it loved no one but him....

I loved this. I think that the picture went very well with it. The poem made me think...and I love to think. I love your choice of words too. Good luck in the contest. I hope you wish me the same.
