Just before dawn

Stillness in thin crisp air
A magical moment
Straddled between night and morning
Not a soul stirs.
Here, I find an unknowable calm
While the world rests,
Eyes closed deeply.
A burst of creativity strikes
As I pick up my pen
And listen closer

Crickets murmur and chirp
Perched atop a tall pine, an owl hoots and coos
As she folds her wings and falls into slumber.
A dove flaps her wings
As she flies through the shadowy sky
I listen closer and hear
Calm serenades of mother earth
As she breathes deeply

The glimmering stars begin to fade
Washed over by a watery paintbrush,
Watercolor skies of deep purple bleed
The moon sinks to her pillow
Slipping below the horizon
As night fades into dawn

Hazy purple shadows rest upon the ground
Dawn waits around the corner
Soon sunbursts shall break through
Entering in the world
In the most remote corner
Of the eastern sky

Lost in a beauty so cruel
A tear trickles down my cheek.
Softly in silence
As I think of you
And long to share this moment
In your arms

Author notes

flyleaf

(5:55 in the morning) I hope it's ok if I included the time in the notes, it didn't really fit in the poem. Let me know if I need to change it.

It's just great. Not only is it my favorite time of the day, but it was wonderfully written. I love the thought of the moon sinking into her pillow. Great Job!

It is a winner with me!!!

I'm so glad to see we share the same love of nature in the morning. To me it is the BEST time to be out and alone.
The picture is fantastic, one you took? I could not have written this as well, superbly done.
Thank you for sharing your beauty, Buddy

The imagery in this poem is really wonderful. It's definitely perfect for the contest. I love this poem. I had to read it over a couple times, and it's got such strong language. I could picture it all. I could relate, too. This is beautiful.

This is b-e-a-ootiful. The imagery and descriptions- idk why but the owl folding down her wings really caught me up in the moment. Great write, I hope you do well in the contest.
