Can we be pardoned and excused
For not getting what we deserved?
Our guilt is unjust and confused,
Our crimes largely unobserved.
Can we temper our sullen need
To seek shelter behind facades?
Can we cast off the venal greed
Of still inebriated gods?
I think we can be forgiven
For the poignancy of these days.
Redemption comes so unbidden
In stunning, accidental ways.
We deserve to be here, we earned
Our defeats honestly I believe.
Among spirits clearly discerned
By their utter lack of reprieve.
