The simple things

One has not lived until one has enjoyed
the burst of life given by
the light blue sky
in the early morning
as the sun is coming out
and the birds are waking up
singing in their dreamy awakening...

One has not lived until one has enjoyed
ten hours on a bus
in the summer sun
letting the breeze come in through the window
to cool down your body
and whip your hair around
as you sit there in only a bra...

One has not lived until one has enjoyed
the simplicity of a sugar high
or running through a sprinkler
for thirty seconds
then complaining it's "too cold"
wrapping up in a towel and sitting in the sun to dry...

The simple things in life
the scent of the woods while camping
the taste of a Popsicle on a summer day
the sight of your first butterfly
the sound of your parents music
the feeling of teenage crushes...

Those are the things that matter...

Author notes

I just thought of all the things, recently or throughout my life that have really sentimental meaning or things I will remember as my happy times...and this came easy...

the thing about the bus rides...when i travel with bugle band, it's an all-girl's band so if we get hot on the bus, and we have a female bus driver, our band leader tells us we should sit shirtless...it's kinda dumb, but it's definitely something I'll remember and definitely makes my teenage-hood that much better:)

anyway, i hope you enjoy...

wow, a bus full of teenage girls in their bras, I bet there were a lot of happy truckers out there. The poem is great, especially this stanza the scent of the woods while camping
the taste of a Popsicle on a summer day
the sight of your first butterfly
the sound of your parents music
the feeling of teenage crushes that basically sums up the freedom of childhood for me.
