Solitude

i'm standing in the dawn light
just listening
to my heart
to my breath
to the ocean
as it laps at my feet
inviting
no one else is awake
just the birds
i hear
the crying
of their voices
the beating
of their wings
against the sighing
of the water
she is speaking to me
the great blue beyond
i hear my name
on her lips
as her waves
rush towards me
i smile at the silence
at the birds
at the sea
at myself
at my own
steady breath
and slowly
beating heart
giving up completely
to the moment
of peace
the water beckons me
so i close my eyes
and let her embrace me
washing me
calming me
loving me
i break to the surface
and look out
at her depths
at the sun
sparkling off
her placid surface
and my heart tells me
not today
today
is for life
for breathing
for beating
so i slip away
from her arms
on to shore
which she hugs
long after
i am gone
waiting for my return
tomorrow
tomorrow
it will be the same
i will choose life
over her loving embrace
because i could not
enjoy her company
the silence
the solace
in any other way.
