It’s just a word the people say, but lo, it’s so much more,
And so I’m going to pause and take a minute to explore
Just how it is that love can be, delectable and sweet,
A place where wounded souls can go, a comforting retreat.
A few just look for ecstasy while others want a friend,
Infatuation there for some who just don’t comprehend.
For love is not a feeling, no, it’s way much more you see
So skepticism overwhelms and forms their destiny.
What is it then that makes me feel so positive and sure –
The lucid pictures in my mind of something strong and pure.
It’s no nirvana, for you see, it comes from diligence.
Rejection of, “I’m out of here,” accepting permanence.
Enamored of a false belief that nothing can go wrong,
And wanting only what WE want, we’re often too headstrong.
Obsession with the mighty “I”, no thought of compromise,
We give up far too easily when things seem polarized.
But now I’ve been distracted, let me get right back on track,
For sometimes perseverance is the thing I sadly lack.
And when you speak of lasting love, that’s sure one thing you’ll need;
If you ain’t got it in your pack, you’d better not proceed.
So what’s the evidence of love, about which I can write?
She’s sitting right behind me here, as she is every night.
Forty seven years it’s been since we first said, “I do.”
And yet we’re still together after all that we’ve been through.
So, incredulity to some is normal to the rest.,
And what we share, the love we have, has withstood all the tests.
And so it is that I believe, the evidence quite clear,
That love is real and can be had, if we just persevere.
So never doubt that love is there, e’en though you can’t perceive,
It can be yours at any time, if only you’ll believe.

Exceptionally important Message. Always perfect rhythm and rhyme. These are truths every couple should know. -
Seeing you and Kathy and hearing your guy's story lets me know that there has to be a perfect match out there for every-body. You guys are like the ultimate fairy tale. The way you write about love shows how you really believe in it. I wish I did, love seems so far for me, it feels like I will never find mr. right. But reading this poem gives me a little faith...thank you for that. I see you got a gold trophy here...lol...does that really surprise me, especially with how magnificently you write. You are going to be a famous poet one day I just know it.

True craftmanship
my man, my hat is raised, you brought forward the true words to convince any soul that love does exist. This was an amazing piece, crafted with skill and supported by knowledge gained from your years together.
I can proudly say, after 24 yrs and 4 before we wed, that I too, will keep trying to convince all who question its existance. For like you, I know it's there. well done on the gold, well deserved.

First of all, I have to say, Your wife and you are such a beautiful couple...both so good looking. Second,
I have only been married for well almost four years now, not long but we have been through some rough spots but never stop loving, and supporting eachother. Now adays I see younger kids pushing/rushing their lifes with relationships...and seeing to many giving up easly on the other. My point is A love like yours, is every ones dream! Your poems shows through it all your love is still strong. I just hope my hubby and me make it all the way. Congrats and best luck for more years to come with your love.

OK I gotta tell you that I absolutely love this piece! This is the best description of true love that I have read to date. Perseverance is the key word and after 47 years I know that you know what you are talking about! This was a delight to read! I think I'll print it out and let my hubby read it as well! Love is rare now; all kinds of love...love of family, love of friends. Eros, agape...whichever. Families are falling apart and the Bible says it would be that way due to a lack of love. If you have it, it is due to the hard work both of you have done. I'm coming up on our 40th anniversary and I know that every added year is a blessing. Your poem is a nice reminder.

That was awesome. I really think you brought out some of the reasons why relationships fail and how you can stop that from happening as well as giving a meaningful look at a clearly strong relationship and how it can last and work.
