A Call for Philosophy

If there's no heaven and all we are
are cells and space, in random spots
then I'll go out and find my place
the way the Taoists do

So angels aren't behind the clouds
to look on Earth and sing their hymns
and those who’ve died - we loved so dear -
just don't exist, like eons before

But that stops me not from looking up
in admiration of white and blue
I still wander streets by skyscraped tombs
noting contrasts of steel and sky

So there's my god, in the Northern wind
channeled in veins spindling in leaves
on rainy dusks and crisp cold dawns
I'll go to church in my own way

Without the altars, or patron saints
my feet sing hymns as they hit the ground
These sermons are my own, and I listen well
Donating to the cause with heartbeats and breaths

Author notes

Sometimes I believe in a personal God. Sometimes I don't. But I always believe in the beauty and balance of Earth.

I haven't seen blank verse in ages. It's refreshing.

And, you know, I feel almost exactly the same way. I haven't believed in a personal God for some time, but I find faith and inspiration just in nature and in myself. I think spirituality should be a very personal thing.

I love the subtle complexity of this. It doesn't ambush the imagination with pointless, abstract metaphors; it's direct, but textured.

I liked this quite a bit.
