Millenium Festivities

It died as champagne bubbles
uncorked the midnight hour, -
its blaze of light a timeless sight
atop the Eiffel Tower.

Indoors chose those who'd 'made it',
outside poor flows who'll pay
for pensions which will coat the rich
on life’s unequal way.

Behind, an old age faded,
before the Internet,
between the two was hullaballoo
athirst for new and wet.

"Unlock the Future's windows !"
the festive millions cried,
"Fast set aside, let Past's bolts slide !"
and the old millenium died.

Few thoughts on the past were wasted, -
no time to reminisce -
just seconds short when instincts fought
twixt piss and kiss for miss.

The ground swell was terrific,
prolific the morning press, -
the flags unfurled as one world whirled
unheeding into the next.

Though some attach importance
to numbers prime and round,
to dates picked clean, it’s still to be seen
that such theorems are sound.

Two thousand years for Christians,
four more for wandering Jews,
since man pitched tents, paid Peter's pence
to [pl]ease religions’ dues.

Some believe in dinosaurs,
some in Men from Mars,
some that we're sent here to repent
sins woven into our stars.

So when the champagne's pouring,
when crowds roar, take time out,
for dreams make room before the tomb
ambitions brings to nowt.

  • The millennium festivities seem like a life time ago already, yet I remember them well as I was at a new year’s party like so many other people that night, and when midnight came the celebratory fireworks were like WW111 starting. The volume was incredible. While enjoying the celebrations I was also wondering how much money had gone up in smoke in just a few minutes that could have been better spent helping those who needed it. Strange how the mind works!

Then of course there was a mad flurry of media coverage in the run up as many people the world over were worried about the ‘millennium bug’ taking computer systems down and then the quiet relief on New Year’s Day when they realised that absolutely nothing had gone wrong, the world was still turning, humanity was still there and life would go on as normal, dinosaurs, aliens and theologians alike.

The news showed coverage of the celebrations from across the world and also many predictions about what the future would hold, mostly on the positive side, though the century so far appears not to be living up to those predictions. However the celebrations will be remembered long into the future. I celebrated locally and that was pretty impressive but to have seen those in the major cities such as from the top of the Eiffel Tower must have been spectacular. The tower is quite something to be seen in the daytime but at night it is a show to rival any firework display and is a sight I will never forget, as goes for the rest of Paris. Thanks for bringing back some great memories

This is quite quirky and enjoyable; I especially like the first and fourth stanzas and would be tempted to use them together as a short poem for the world wonders anthology I am compiling, with your permission. I was nearby during the Millenial festivities in Paris which came on the tail of Hurricane Lothar and brought us a Y2K of its own. All those beautiful old trees in Paris that were lost! It was amazing that the show still went on. This made me think of that.
