I see death and depravity in the mad eyes
of mumbling youths and drug-befuddled women:
the living corpses who haunt the sink estates
and ruined neighbourhoods of my city.
Broken neighbourhoods and broken lives,
lives devoid of hope or redemption.
I see children who know nothing of childhood,
men who have never been men
and women who are faded replicas
of their equally-faded mothers.
Such is life--if you can call it that--
as it is lived in the streets of my area.
I see crime, grime and blank despair,
the miasma of poverty and neglect reflected
in the ravaged faces of the stricken people.
This is the other side of the coin of progress,
where the uneducated underclass is left to fester.
I see the future....and there's no future in it.

This is a good poem, and I like your diction.

I see children who know nothing of childhood, this coins the raw deal that many children have, not only here in the uk, but globally too. Sad sad world Bill. Great write though. sj

Pretty much the same almost everywhere Bill. Nottingham is going from bad to worst everyday. You are right , there is no future in it.....great write...mal

Truthful write here Bill. The future does look grime for all generations and yet the most innocent souls, the children suffer and see only darkness ahead.

i very bleak picture you've painted here bill, so very true though.it seems pretty hopeless at times when you see young girls looking as old as their mothers, having numerous kids to unknown fathers, ravaged by drugs and hardship, and with no apparent way out.dragged up by unfit parents and left to scour the streets for something to do, their future is anything but bright.this is a really good write bill, i enjoyed reading it.
very well done indeed,
alex.
