The Chair

Missing image

As you gaze upon me there
don’t think of me as just a chair,
for I’ve recorded through the years
untold joys and countless tears.

Many people took their ease,
I have a purpose, just to please,
my framework strong, my fabric soft,
now, I languish in a loft.

Alas, I have a stain,
the mark of death is on me,
no matter what they do
it’s there for all to see.

Murdered by her husband
in a jealous rage and hate,
upon that gloomy day,
she had sealed her fate.

The carriage bought her home,
he knew it was her lovers,
she quietly entered through the door
in fear of being discovered.

Retiring to her room
she sat upon me there,
he entered, knife in hand,
he felt he couldn’t bear

to share her with another,
he quickly took her life,
one cold hard thrust, upon her breast,
he murdered his own wife.

He hanged at Newgate Gallows,
by the neck, ‘til dead,
I was sold at auction,
although my cover, red.

Many times since then
new fabric I have had,
still the blood seeps through,
her spirit, oh so sad.

Now I’m forgotten gathering dust,
still she sits and waits,
that fateful day so long ago
when my mistress met her fate.

Wonderful, unique write. So terrible to be a viewer that, in it's existance, alone can do nothing but watch.

From the point of view of the lowly chair. This is so original and I like the idea of the blood continuing to seep through. It reminds me of Lady Macbeth's hand.

A nice ghostly touch to such a dark tale. Murdered while sitting on the chair, and forever shall she sit there, still bleeding through for others to see. I liked it. Good write and gook luck.

In my opinion, one of the hardest (and most rewarding) things a poet does is to put himself/herself into someone else's perspective, whether it's another human being, a made up idea, or even an inanimate object. :-) You've done a really great job at imagining a narrative for this chair that was easy to follow and entertaining.

I read this poem for the first time a few days ago, and ever since I've wondered about the chairs I've sat in -- haha, does this chair have a confession? Is it witness to something that no one else knows? What has happened on this chair?

It's a really intersting/horrific world to be put into, and that's why I really appreciate this poem. It's helped me to look at objects I thought I knew in a brand new way. Good write

Hey Sue this is great, the flow is brilliant. I love the story behind this poem it reminds me of a place I used to live, where in the church every time the blood stain is removed from the floor it comes back. I love stories like this and in poetry form you done a fantastic job. Keep up this brilliant work my dearest friend Love Brian.

Wonderful story piece, kept me captivated, to tell it from the chair's perspective was very cleverly done and I could see the ghost of young woman still waiting. Excellent imagery.
