The Lay of the Sky-Horse (Ballad Verse)

“He met his brother Haiz’um
Above the backs of Notus’ hills
A land devoid of rain or snow
Not crossed by rippling streams or rills

The writhing heat of summerland
The heat of slow, unending rot
Was twisting, turning in the air
To burn his wings and singe his hocks

‘Come you have to southland grim’
His brother nickered on the air
‘Its heat alive with my black ire
Its rot a mark of my despair

Firstborn of Eldest that you are
Your father sent you to this place
Born on the wings of the North Wind
To see the scope of my disgrace

You neither of you truly know
The breadth of pain and fear that lies
Within the ones cast to the dark
The ones forsaken and despised

But now I know the strength that dwells
Far from the tundra of the north
From Canon’s rolling hills and dells
My progeny will be sent forth

As black as Notus of the night
Will be the vengeance of the one
Sired upon the white Skymare
Her second foal, her bastard son’

At this the elder tossed his head
And booming were his mighty cries
The icy fire of Narchen pure
Was brought to life within his eyes

‘It was no act of the North Wind
That saw you hated, feared, and scorned’
Said proud Echdae, Epona’s son,
The Sky Horse true, the Single-Horned

‘It was the choices that you made
To seek your father’s sordid work
The South Wind’s heart is black and maimed
A place where only demons lurk

Whatever horrors you have found
Despite the shade in which you delve
I will not fall to your hate’s seeds
No matter how depraved or fell

For I pay heed to other things
Than shadows, pits, and undercrofts
I turn my gaze to stars above
The moon enmeshed in heaven’s loft

In me the North Wind’s freedom blows
His passion free of trace or rein
But also flows the Skymare’s love
As sure as blood does in my veins

There is no place for shadows here
Despite the suffering we have borne
There is no room for vengeful thought
In us, the sons of unicorns’”

If you're wandering about all the horse references, it may help you to know that this hymn comes from the mythology of the Estari which are actually a race of sentient horses as ridiculous as that may sound. This hymn is about some of the gods in Estari mythology which are based on a Gaulish diety called Epona, some Celtic dieties, the Greek wind gods, and one mystical horse called Haiz'um that appears in the Qur'an and is said to be the mount of the archangel Gabriel. There is a lot of information in this poem and to some extent it assumes some foreknowledge of the Estari and their culture, but I thought it still be might enjoyable.
