Proud Sailin' Schooners (Hybrid)

I was born a’ways inland
At a castle landlocked
‘Twas a poor twist o’ fate for one such as me
I bore her no malice
That king’s lavish palace
But a voice from the west was callin’ to me
She spoke o’ wide spaces, open air, and the sea
That voice from the west that was callin’ to me

I answered her callin’
I could do nothin’ else
Though fourteen winters alone had I walked
To Dragonshead port
I made my resort
A proud sailin' schooner is what I most sought
From The Outrang Medan the freebooters balked
That proud sailin' schooner is what I most sought

Never a prouder ship
As fast as an osprey
Did ya see on the sea than The Outrang Medan
I was taken aboard
To scrub up her floors
But never a cabin boy had bigger plans
Than did I on the gallant Outrang Medan
Never a cabin boy had bigger plans

Never’s a lubber
Taken to sailin’
Like ole Danco Saunton when ‘e put to sea
I had brine in my veins
And fish guts for brains
At least so the cap’n said once to me
I could outsail any seadog ya found on the sea
So says the cap’n at least once to me

In Wyte Keenblade’s days
When Morak looked north
Sabeteca Spearbiter came with her fleet
That tough dingo bitch
Burned out warships like pitch
Until we despaired she’d ever know defeat
Our cap’n 'e swore in battle they’d meet
And 'e’d see hisself that she knew defeat

In Skate’s Cove we berthed
The Outrang Medan
The one place yet the dingo had spared
The Smuggler’s Bay
Was a safe place to stay
The dingo bitch wouldn’t dare track us there
For such was the nature o’ such craven corsairs
That they wouldn’t seek us while we harbored there

She came in at night
A full fleet in her wake
And 'erself ‘board The Maelstrom, a flagship most grand
Confused and dazed
She set many ablaze
'Fore they had even a thought o’ makin’ a stand
She even set fire to The Outrang Medan
'Fore we even thought o’ makin’ a stand

The cap’n 'e leaped
'is breeches aflame
And most o’ the crew leapt about like mad fools
They went o’er the sides
To save their charred hides
And ole Danco Saunton alone kept ‘is cool
The cabin boy only remembered the rules
‘Bout raging storms and still keepin’ ‘is cool

I leapt like the others
But not for the sides
I took the wheel up real firm in my paws
The sails I let down
‘Til the west wind I found
‘Tis the Saunton wind blowin' so true that I saw
And ole Zephyrus Windrider lent me a paw
‘Twas his wind fillin' the sails that I saw

I knew what I did
As I turned that proud ship
The Outrang Medan was glowin' alight like a star
Though she was ablaze
I went on unfazed
Though the flames were leapin' from mast, sail, and spar
I set 'er on sailin' alight like a star
As the flames ragin' burned every mast, sail, and spar

Towards The Maelstrom
I went on as straight
As a marlin does leapin' the crest o’ the waves
The ship came alive
With fire at 'er sides
I pressed forward to give her the thing that she craved
To send that corsair bitch to a watery grave
I knew what the proud ship beneath me most craved

I met with The Maelstrom
Like Tellos himself
Like the Hellhound unleashed from the Pitts where 'e dwells
I felt my stout prow
Break the enemy’s bow
And sent The Maelstrom down beneath the sea’s mighty swells
On the bottom she lives now, on the seabed she dwells
That bitch found her home under sea’s foamy swells

But the Outrang had splintered
Up close to 'er prow
She was even then tossin' in mighty death throes
Down close to her foes
She found her repose
She came to rest by The Maelstrom in currents below
She found her peace down there in the deeps, I know
When she came to rest down in the currents below

On towards the beach then
I swam like a dolphin
I pulled myself drippin’ on up to the sands
‘O’ such a marvelous feat
I’ll n’er see repeat’
Said the cap’n when 'e too pulled hisself onto land
'e was gawkin’ and starin’ in a manner most grand
When 'e finally managed to pull hisself onto land

‘But that proud sailin' schooner
Has gone down to the deeps
And ‘tis a pity that none might remember her name
For 'er memory’s sake
Her name ye should take
For no one but you has got stronger claim
And you and she both’ll get yer due fame
For such a feat as that, no one has stronger claim’

So I did what 'e said
And I took 'er good name
So that no one would forget The Outrang Medan
That fine vessel’s fame
Is tied to my name
Such a proud sailin' schooner’s name will stand
For as long as I’m traipsin’ o’er sea or o’er land
For such a time as that, her proud name will stand

Author notes

Outrang Medan is a character that appears in a fantasy trilogy I'm writing. I wanted to write an old fashioned sailing shanty that had a zany flair to it. Something entertaining but somewhat ridiculous much as I tried to make the character of Outrang himself.

Hehe, I love the style! Definately shanty-like! Light hearted (at least I thought so) and fun.

    Good luck in the contest,
