That Old Road

"Two roads diverged"
Said an older man
Whose brow was furrow set
"I took the one less travelled"
Said he
And I knew he'd not forget

The time he stood
At the crossroads there
And made his choice of two
There was, of course
No turning back
And this he surely knew

For once we make
A choice, we set
A chain of next events
And once we start
The path we choose
Fate often circumvents

But it is waste
To ponder on
What "could have happened when..."
We take our chance
And choose our road
And ne'er look back again

Author notes

In honor of the renowned poet, Robert Frost. This is my response, I guess you'd say, to his poem The Road Not Taken. I love that poem because it is so true about life; and he expresses that truth so beautifully. My favorite lines are the last three:

"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."
-Robert Frost

This is certainly in the style of Robert Frost, and though he's classified as a modern poet, he really teeters on the edge of a "fireside" poet. What the book is focused on is more of a contemporary look at poetry (see Mary Oliver, Margaret Atwood, Pablo Neruda, even surrealists like Craig Raine.)

The rhythm is a little off in this, particularly in the first few verses, but other than that, there's nothing "wrong" with this, other than it's just not the style of poem we're looking to put in this particular book.

I hope that cleared things up!!

    Thanks,
    Elizabeth

What a wonderful poem to write about, it is one of my favorites. And your take on it is so thoughtful:

    We take our chance
    And choose our road
    And don't look back again

That is so true. A good poem honoring Frost, I really enjoyed this!

    Exactly!

This is actually one of my favorites by him. Before I really became aware of the massive art he created. In high school we were made to read this and it wasn't until after that I understood the significance to my life. Wonderful pick! Thank you for giving credit where it was due. It is always wonderful to see another moved by his art. The poem itself is a wonderful reply I believe he would have been honored to receive! Thanks for entering my contest.
