Homage to The Celtic Triple Goddess Brigid

Keeper of the sacred sparkling fire, I welcome you
Into my heart inspiration and motivation to fill
As twenty candles burn tall and bright in orange hue
Creative ideas spring forth on this night chill.

Oh exalted one, far and wide Goddess of every poet
Divine Mother, young maiden and very wise crone
Listening to Celtic music as I wait for your touch
My thoughts align and intent becomes clear and hone.

On Tuesday in white shells I offer you drops of snow
Oh Goddess with transformative powers umpteen
Grateful for the blessings upon me you bestow
To connect with you, so fortunate have I been.

Leaving a white handkerchief on my table at night
With a prayer of thanks I request your inspiration
In the days that come as I visualise and hold it tight
You bless my specific need, my wish sees completion.

Counterpart to brave Archangel Michael's warrior energy
You put your foot down assertively, sticking to truth
In Kildare, Ireland millions pay respect in your temple
Oh 'Bride' whose passionate fiery flame does soothe.

Honouring you Imbolc is celebrated on February First
As daylight increases earth smiles in seedlings of spring
Your flame golden gives direction and quenches my thirst
Making creative ideas and ventures succeed effortlessly.

For all that You have blessed me with, I thank Thee
And I hear you whisper to me, "Sweet one, Blessed be"!

A lovely piece of poetry that was also very informative for me. You certainly are knowledgable in regards to Celtic mythology, and have combined that knowledge with a fine poetic craftsmanship to create a wonderful hymn of homage. Best of luck in my contest, and thanks for entering.

Christ. If that won the bronze...

Once again, very well done! Pagan poetry is always so much nicer to read than other religious poems I think. Mainly because paganism in general is so much more intense and intimate. You have chosen your dieties wisely it appears, and I do hope that you continue to put out this kind of marvelous work.

    one word, WOW!

"And I hear you whisper to me, "Sweet one, Blessed be"!"

that line right there says it all. I admit, my opinion as well is also a bit biased, but, OH WOW! I have seen hundreds of pagans attempt writing about our belief, and none have so charmingly succeeded. Dear Poet, you are indeed gifted by the Goddess with the Silver tongue of a bard. If all of your poetry is half as good as this, I stand in awe of a Master wordsmith. saying great write is putting mildly.

    Blessed Be,

you did a remarkable job with this subject and format, although there is obviously one aspect you might want to address, and that is the consistency of your rhyme scheme. I can't think of any good alternatives off the top of my head, but i bet you can figure something out.

I long to visit Kildare - that thin place between now and eternity. If you'll excuse my ignorance, I don't understand the concept of a Goddess, but I know the myths of St. Bride, St. Patrick, St. Columba (Columcille) (I know them as Saints...) and savour the truths held within their stories. This is a beautiful prayer (if that word is not gouche!)

Hi Anamchara, Brigid is the Celtic Goddess of poetry, smithcraft, inspiration and medicine. I have it written in several books. She is a Saint too as you say. Most Saints in different cultures are given the respect of God. For example, in our Hindu culture, we regard a Saint named Sai Baba as God...more like, an 'avatar' or incarnation of God.

Not matter the version of the goddess we worship she is always glad to hear our voice. It matters little our mode of worship so long as we pay tribute to those deserving. If you could clarify something for me about the number 20 I thought that the number 3 and it's multiples as well as 5 and the number 7 were sacred I did not know about 20. What signifigance does 20 hold? May you walk in light always.

      20 candles answer...

Hi Sensual! Your question is most welcome. Here is the answer:

"In the days when Celtic Paganism was the main religion of Ireland, 19 priestesses tended the flame of the Goddess Brigid. They rotated, one each day, and it is said, on the 20th day, the Goddess herself tended the flame. This evolved into an early Christian tradition whereby nuns in the abbey she founded were considered guardians of the "Fire of St. Brigid". After her death, its said the fire burned continuously and took a great deal of wood, but the ashes did not increase - until the church outlawed the practice. The Sisters of St. Brigid order continue to tend "the eternal spiritual fire of St. Brigit", and members of a worldwide organisation called Ord Brighideach continue to maintain the 20 day rotation schedule, keeping :Brighid's flame" alive."

      Hope this answers the question

This answer is from the book - A Goddess Is A Girl's Best Friend" by Laurie Sue Brockway.

      Love and Blessings In Abundance,
      Charishma

I really like the intent of this poem, your word choice, and the sense of devotion you bring. However, you are so talented with your words, rhyming seems to hold you back. I think you could take this poem and create a masterpiece of freeverse... you are obviously so inspired by Brigid that you could write volumes.

That being said, this is a wonderful tribute to her.

Wow! Very nice! The imagery is just beautiful and the symbolism is passionate and elegant in itself. I feel as though I can see what you're describing. A poignant piece with nice rhymes. This poem is not typical as in, its rhyme tell of emotion--unlike many that tell of someone just trying to find a ryhme! Nice form and flow as is the opening and closing lines. The opening pulls readers into a beautiful image almost of fantasy and the end makes people give a sigh of joy. Wonderful.
