Ballad of Columbine

‘Tis the story of Columbine,
A sad story at that.
This started on a day so fine,
Some slept, some ate, some sat.

It was sixty degrees outside,
Sixty degree’s it was.
Not long ‘til graduations tide,
Just seventeen days ‘twas.

‘Twas the twentieth of April,
The year was ninety-nine.
Two ostracized boys set to kill,
The jocks at Columbine.

This happened on Adolf’s birthday,
For the boys worshipped him.
Ten days before the first of May,
Coincidence was slim.

Nobody could see it coming,
Although the boys were odd.
They didn’t stop it from happening,
Not even our awesome God.

The two boys wore long trench coats,
Loaded with guns and bombs.
They wrote their plans down in their notes,
Discovered by their Moms.

Time was quarter past eleven,
When the first shots were made.
Thirteen people went to Heaven,
Some needed medical aid.

Two-semi automatic guns,
Made sounds of pop, pop, bang.
Caused by two sad, forgotten sons,
“Trench Coat Mafia” Gang.

They strode into the parking lot,
Were determined to kill.
Didn’t matter who, ‘twas death they sought,
And the air gained a chill.

Next they went into the lunch room,
Still shooting as they walked.
Sadly, this became a dark tomb,
All ‘cuz two boys were mocked.

Random bullets were everywhere,
Students hid behind doors.
How could two boys be so unfair?
As people hit the floors.

They hid in closets and bathrooms,
All fearing for their lives.
The closets and bathrooms,
Everyone believed saved their lives.

Cassie Bernall was a martyr,
For the Columbine School.
There was no one smarter,
Her death was very cruel.

Plain and simple, she had said “yes”,
For she believed in the Lord.
And for her faith she did confess,
Then up to the Heaven’s she soared.

Last, they entered the library,
Still shooting as they went.
The site of blood was so scary,
Knowing they were Hell-bent.

Realizing what they had done,
Reality set in.
They ended their lives with a gun,
They had paid for their sin.

Follows standard ballad form, and I researched all of these facts from old news reports.

    Awesome

Sometimes i think about killing everyone in this pitiful so called world. I know what you mean when you want someone to pay for their sins toward you. I dont know if you meant it that way or not but this is what i got out of it. Keep on writting and i will always keep this poem in my head...Thanks for the chance to read a poem that was about the way i felt...

This was a nicely written poem. In some places it feels like the story is rushed, and the use of "twas", etc., kind of distracted from the poem since you did not follow through with such language in its entirety. Also, in several places you added an apostrophe to a word that was only meant to be pluralized, not posessive. Such as, "degree's", "mom's", and "heaven's". These should all be "degrees", "moms", and "heavens". I thought you conveyed the emotions of the people involved very well, from the attackers to the victims. Overall, nicely done.

I liked this poem, and I felt it was a heartfelt piece on what happened, but in my own personal opinion, I must disagree with the last line. Although they did turn the guns on themselves, effectively ending their lives, I do not believe they paid for their sins because they never saw the pain and hurt they caused on the families, although I'm sure they realized what they had done. They never had to suffer the consequences of what they did. They never had the chance to suffer the remorse and guilt, they never had the chance to talk or forgive or be forgiven. So thus, I do not think they paid for their sins. I think the people they killed, paid for their sins.

But again, very well done. Obviously, this got me thinking which is always a good thing. Thanks for taking the time to enter it.

Best of luck and sorry about the comment delay!
