Often have I heard the question
Spoken from below my limbs,
"Dear tree, I wish that you could tell
Of all the things you've seen.
Tell me of the history
That is not seen in books,
Tell me of the land I walk
And the people long since gone."
I have seen things great and far,
Some things petty and small.
I have been told secrets
By little girls needing help,
And I have held up little boys
Who desired to fly the skies.
I have seen wars and love,
Neither showing an end in sight.
I have grown tall and strong,
Been threatened by the man's ax.
I have been struck by lightening
And thought my days were done.
I have lived through Winters long
And thrived in Springs too short;
I've shaded many from Summer's heat
And changed colors every Fall.
My names are few but given by many,
I've been worshipped and hugged,
Leaned on and kicked apart.
I've been asked for advice
And debated in value,
I've gone days without a word.
I've hosted birds of many a feather
And fed their children for months.
My life has been long and full.
I have not moved but I have seen.
I have not answered but I have heard
Every word you have spoken to me.
I cannot show it but I love you,
Each one that comes to my side.
Your love and malice have been felt
But for you I keep on breathing.

Sis, this is divine! You have brought the tree to life with your elegant words and flow. Oh, to bring forth the words that flow from your pen. Gorgeous! Hugs, Patricia
