to lark

Missing image

i know it too -

and furthermore the black
sparrows of loss,
pinned down
in the final chapter
of ink

through the thin night
the timid cantos
of women find me

we laugh and weep;
no other defense here

(and I remember Lucebert:
everything of value
are defenseless
)

outside
the rain walks
around the house;
it brings some comfort

but the hour, the hour

is a deep corridor,
hung with the paused
selves of women
who dream

of Van Gogh’s skylarks
rising from the rustle
of wheat fields

Author notes

Lucebert was a Dutch writer and poet wellknown for these words: ¨Alles van waarde is weerloos¨ - everything of value are defenceless.

    YAY! Poetry with great art attached to it! lol I love seeing that. You know, I generally see these annoying photos that look like they are directly from women's magazines. lol. Blah. But THIS was entertaining. Okay, enough about the art.

    First off, your title is beautiful, and you open your piece with a creative phrasing twist, if that makes sense. It was like walking in to the middle of a conversation and saying "Woops... I'm not supposed to hear this", but then you stop and listen anyway. LOL In other words, just reading that one line made me feel a little like a voyeur. I quite enjoyed that feeling

    And... well... that's about it. I just loved this poem. Truly and seriously adored it. I couldn't even TRY to find something to bitch about or nit pick which is, oddly enough, almost disappointing. lol. Damn you! But thanks for entering :

    It painted a picture of sorrow, that shifts to jubilance and then malignant feelings all over again! You really captured the picture...nice work!

    I like the fusion you have created between emotion and nature.....Much the way Mr. Van Gogh takes one from sadness to joy to pain.

    Excellence again

    These lines take me aback some 33 years. It was the first time I visited my husband's grandfather's land in Alabama. He had some 90 acres, and in the midst of those acres was a small shanty (shotgun house). The first night we stayed there it rained on the tin roof. The soft percussion sound of the rain hitting the tin made me sleep like a baby. It sounded like an Africa lullaby to me. Thanks for taking me there again.

    Your poem is a wonderful introspective writ. We do "laugh and weep", sometimes in the very same breath. The imagery here is as masterfully written as Van Gogh's art is painted. Our "dreams" are abounding and shall be fulfilled, if we never stop dreaming. I can hear the "skylarks" ascend from the "wheat field". The quote rings so loudly in my ear. This is expertly written Nicolette. Your work always leaves me to ponder for extended moments.

    Simply Beautiful!

    Much Love & Many Blessings ♥

    My Dear Nic...

    This is breathtaking! I am at a total loss for words to explain both the beautiful imagery, and the raw emotion in this extraordinary piece of word art. I LOVE ..."the rain walks around the house...," "....the paused selves of women who dream...," and ..."through the thin night the timid cantos...." Simply BRILLIANT, my dear friend!! Your expert use of metaphors is NOT to be rivaled, and is truly perfection. Albeit, one of the most beautiful things I've read in a looooong time! You just keep getting better and better (if that's possible) with every "jewel" you bestow upon us. My "bookmark" section is crammed full of your work! Love you infinitly, Sweet Lady! This is incredible!! A dozen roses at your feet! *stands up and claps profusely...*

    amazing

    as always, your imagery is so perfectly chosen
    each word powerful and the flow perfectly simple

    love the quote, everything of value are defenseless
    that echos in my mind

    then your ending is the grand finale

    a standing ovation to you, dear poet

    and again...

    once more you've managed to leave me staring and wondering how you do it. This is so deep and emotional. I simply love this. Not much more I can say other than "Brilliant".

    Nicolette, I've never seen this painting before, but I knew it was Van Gogh. There is a melancholy to his art that is his signature.

    I think when we bend to earth for so long, there is no other route but wings and dreams that seek blue sky and that breath which flies to the spirit. ~Karen

    Kinda like doves returning from places where words hide from abusive fingers...and when such is so that smile can rise ...there is twittering in the brush stroke...so beautiful and long....

    Whoaaa...Ooohhh, Nic...what an incredibly fragile penning this is...& how much strength reverberates from every line, my Sister of the Soul...I know this one far too well, as you know...we both do, my dear Friend...I have to admit, though; you kinda scared me with the picture, Sweetie...I have a documentary on videotape on the making of "The Agony and the Ecstasy", with Kirk Douglas as Van Gogh & Anthony Quinn as Gaugin...This was, I believe, the last picture Van Gogh painted prior to committing suicide...sooo. yeah. Scared me a bit. Apropos, too, it seems...But we are always, always writing towards the light & away from darkness...still, we must acknowledge the duality that is within nature, too...Brilliant writing, Nic...So good to see your pen on the move again, Dear Heart...
