Yet, the chill I felt made me shiver... burrrr!!!
Passing the lonely bench, I noticed him.
Or rather, I thought I'd noticed. E M P T Y...
Empty now was the place he always sat.
I seemed to smell the odor he had shared,
always exhaling vile liquor's death.
The smile he shared through broken teeth... G O N E...
Others just passed on by, ignoring him.
Me... well, something in his eyes beckoned me.
The loneliness, the sadness, and despair...
How could one ignore them? It could be... M E
Today, I wiped a tear from my eyes as I passed.
His boots really should be thrown away now.
Not by me, I want to remember him.
I want to remember all that... I H A V E...
"But for the grace of God, there go I"
Author notes
i saw this picture and instantly thought of several in my area who have frozen to death in the past few years. these boots are a symbol of each of them and for me to remember to be thankful for each moment i have on this earth that God has provided and blessd me with. it could always be worse than it is at this moment. thank you for this contest. hope
i tried to copy a link to the photo this is written for here but could not for some reason. sorry.

this is sad...it made me think to be honest. the way that you mentioned it was his lack of presence that attracted your attention was interesting. and the spacing between your words added quite a bit to the poem, by giving the visual impression of emptiness, not just through the words. I wish you luck in this contest, it is definately a great poem!
