you may call me eccentric
or an individual
with individuality
& I would listen to you
if you would listen to me
I'd like Ben Harper
& the Blind Boys of Alabama
to sing my song & proclaim
from the soul
the gospel
of humanity
they could sing
the harmony
of the power of indigo
written across page
in no-man-no
lyrics to let each note reflect
in the-light-of-the-day
& call for Bush to stop burning
to lay down weaponry
harming our human race today
in this call to be armed
by the power of the pen
allowing man
to sit down and stand up
by the spilling of ink
encouraging a way of dealing
with all that needs healing
as brothers in kohl & cream
sigh & sign the same line
"not in my name-there is no awe in war"
there is no freedom
within the freedom to fight
just animosity
setting the world alight
his-story laid down
58,000 men in the slam of 'Nam
as the fittest
with teeth capped for media-flash
& their loved one's too
were held in disharmony
for politicians view
tempus fugit & time
marches with men
sent to Iraq & it's wrong
that one man's dream
becomes everyman's nightmare
for a swan song
we need singers, we need a song,
poets to promote a way to get along,
to spill it in indigo
proclaiming no-man-no
not in my name
there is no awe in war
this is my call to be armed
with the power of the pen
my vision
of a way of dealing
with the premise of healing
we are not free
within the freedom to fight
but lay down our souls
as we bury our men
& whatever stance you take
let it be let it be
your personal responsibility
to open eyes to see
that perspective is one thing
& liberty too
but those that we bury
will not rise again
except within heartache
of life and love lost
in the war of reign

GOOD WRITE!!!
here's the deal man, we are ALL individuals!!! and there ARE some things worth fighting for, this is one of them. individuality. and because someone is willing to stand up and fight for it, we can be an individual. THANK GOD! somebody was willing to spill blood (usually there own) so we could spill ink. right? think about this. love GYPSYfish

Your thoughts and feelings are expressed quite well. The tone is set in the beginning and continues through undisturbed. 'not in my name - there is no awe in war' will stand out in my mind for a long time. This is definitely a well thought out poem that makes one think. I quite like this. Well done dear poet.

This is brilliant, it does make on think and ponder over it, while reading it a few more times, everything you have written is here, and so very true, you have captured the essence of war so vividly

I really enjoyed this It made me stop and think for a while thank you for sharing this and it was lovely to read aswell
-
I'm a sucker for writes that make me think...and this one certainly did that.
No matter that it is in a "politically incorrect" contest, it makes valid points, and this line stands out for me:
"not in my name-there is no awe in war"
There is NO awe in war...most especially when it's fought for all the wrong reasons.
"...but lay down our souls
as we bury our men..."
"...but those that we bury
will not rise again
except in heartache of memory
& pain..."
These lines say it all. Great job, and good luck in the contest. -

Thankyou so much for reading and commenting, indeed I unnderstand the difficulty when this topic affects us all and the lines that you were in tune with within this piece meant a lot to to me,your comments caused me to refect that perhaps I could edit the piece down to those lines alone and still keep the intensity that I had hoped, tis a problem I have in rambling ithin my writes and perhaps the reader appreciates more a small soundbite, thanks again for your comments, love and light,Yvette

Sisters Arm in Arm
You are a joy sis, link my arm, we'll walk to the gates of the white house, 10 Downing street and shout till we are hoarse NO MORE! This is off to my list and bookmarked to, You are my sister in arms, fighting the battles that need to be fought and my eyes are getting all wet now so I'll go!

-
-
Thankyou Sister of mine,I would be honoured to walk those paths with you,we could have banners proclaiming not in my name, candles and shed light where it needs to be shone.
I very much doubt Blair will be donating any of his royalties to charity-like U2- he walks away soon with a 3 million pound book deal of his memoirs of his time in office and it's a sin that he sanctioned the invasion with an eye to furthering his coffers.
Since he came to power he has also reduced the availability of false limbs via our national health service so we have soldiers dead that widows are fighting for pensions for, soldiers with lost limbs fighting to raise the money to buy them and soldiers with PTSD that no one is helping and within the last couple of months two have killed members of their family.
The two B's pontificate about being proud of our soldiers but one is left feeling that their only pride is having their orders obeyed...
Everyone loses something or someone in war and where is the accountability of the politician?
Many blessings to your own heart and pen, love and light,Yvette

"his-story laid down

When the bombing began in Iraq, I had a flash of Vietnam. I am so fearful that this war will end that way, with thousands of lives taken and no result that solves any problems globally. I hate the thought of that! I mourn for those young people whop have sacrificed their lives for a farce. I also commend those who stand to fill their military responsibilities, and constantly pray for their safe-keeping.
Your poem is poignant. I do hear "Ben Harper and the Blind Boys from Alabama" in harmony singing this tune to the righteousness of world peace. This is a splendid work my sister. I stand with you in an effort to write the wrongs of this country and the world. I wish you the best in the comp.
Blessings & Love ♥

Renee, thankyou for your radiant and insightful thoughts.I believe the total runs into unknown thousands with American,English and Iraqi lives lost. When this first started I feared the same as you.I had gradually recovered my voice and health after serious illness and was talking to my daughter about my concerns and she said if you feel so strongly,do what you tell others to do,do something positive about it.I thought about it and staged my own peace protest under a banner stating "not in my name" and took a petition to send to Blair. It was incredible to witness the animosity it provoked, was threatened, spat and sworn at and yet amidst all the disharmony people did sign, total strangers cried with me in the street as a woman told of her lost son and another that her son had just left...
Sadly my petition was fruitless and yet it was all I could do,I feel exactly as you do,I have total respect and support for our soldiers,God bless them and their families,it is only my wish that no more lives are lost. With the news that 21,000 more soldiers are to be sent by Bush it made me wonder why, there are certainly more questions than answers and I pray that we find a resolution for a peaceful solution.
Thankyou Sister,love and light,Yvette

This is a really good poem. I like the way you have busted out of your box!!!! Great stuff! Naturally you have a way with detail, so that is always refreshingly present but what I like here is that it did not dominate the poem. It complimented it in all the right ways.

Thankyou for the forum, the meeting place for peace and positivity within war and negativity, each man stands in the opinion that he is right but let no man die for another man's fight...
Am glad I may edit til then,I am going to look back at this piece and hopefully tighten it

True
Controvercial subject! Poem done in tasteful manner. Content a thought provoker. You penned it well, Don Good luck in the contest
-
-
Don,thankyou for your thoughts. The duality is that it is percieved by some to be MORE controversial to call for a cessation to war than it is by those that vote at ballot box with a cross that places one man on a podium and allows his dream to inflict nightmarish reality...
At least by airing my thoughts no one is injured, killed, maimed or suffers PTSD...
I respect and value our soldiers for their courage and ability to deal, yet my soul weeps that they are sent and my only wish is for arms to be laid down and not men...
Love and light,Yvette

so very surreal. I really enjoyed this... It made me stop and think. That is something that really makes for a fantastic read. To slow down, and enjoy something fresh and vivid.there is no doubt you are in control of your pen and know just where to take us. Great piece!

-
Kendal, thankyou for your comments,am delighted that this piece made you think, for that was my hope, not to add more oil to the fire but to promote a stepping back and looking into the blaze.Any man can easily provoke a fight but not everyman can provoke thought.
Many blessings,Yvette
